How long have you had the FASS system?

Hi Guys

I got my EZ early this spring and pulled 4500# Fiver all summer with really no problem. Except the temp which usally never made it 190, but now does it regular. Any one else had this happen or is this normal for the EZ. Should I look somewhwere else for a problem. Seen temps up to 205 in the hills.

BTW love the EZ, really picked up the bottom end . :)

My buddy had the same problem with his overheating. His was a '99 also and was towing 8K lbs. Purchased a new 180 degree thermostat from Cummins for about $45 not sure exactly but under $50 and that solved the problem. The original thermostat was sticking and not opening fully. I think there is a lot of information on the "sticking or malfunctioning" thermostat. I just used a siphon and lowered the level of the coolant below the thermostat housing and took off the two bolts and viola installed the new part and reinstalled the two bolts and refilled the radiator with coolant. Works like a charm. AHughes Central Oregon.

Ahughes, right on.

The thermostats can be a dicey game. Over on DTR there's a guy (Haulin In Dixie) who lost an engine because of the t-stat sticking. Then he lost another engine!!

I'd not only replace the thermostat, but I'd also check the back of the radiator for oily grime. The vent hose in front of the engine sprays an oily mist, and this grimes up the front of the engine and often the back of the radiator.

This grime on the radiator can cause overheating. Cleaning it with some degreaser (simple green, purple stuff, etc) will often help a lot.

I had the same problem, I finally put 180* T-State and rodded the rad. In my case 42 was plugged. Much better now.

Thanks for the quick replies guys!! :)

My truck only has 66K on it,still think

I need thermostat or rodded out, I

will be checking it though.

The only other thing I was worried about

was the trans, only noticed a couple hundred

rpm's between shifts and in lock up still drops

but seems to go up with throttle, did not get on it,

to see if reved out though. :(

Had my thermostat replaced at about 20k miles, before my EZ because temps would climb when pulling, not sure what temp thet put in, I think it was a recall or something because they acted like they knew it was a problem. Since my EZ 190 is normal I will see a little more when under a load. I wouldn't think 205 pulling hard is a problem. good luck

KKeen I see you have a suncoast single, did you get the whole package

or just TQ, and your thoughts on it, and how many miles did you have on

before you had to do that? And what do you pull if you don't mind me being nosey?

Thanks for all replys!!

Hey just thought I would chime in here. I haven't put one in my CTD yet but have in all my gassers. I had put in FAILSAFE thermostats from Motorad. They work like a charm! Instead on staying closed when they go bad these trick thermostats fail in the open position!

Motorad Failsafe Thermostat.

205 isn't overheating. Redline is something like 250 give or take? As long as the temps come up a bit and stabilize everything should be okay. Wild swings would indicate a bad t-stat or other cooling problems. When I'm empty my water temp stays just below the 12 o'clock mark and when I'm pulling it sits just above. It'll rise a bit going uphill and drops back down on the other side.

Sounds like normal ops to me. Couldn't hurt to take Hohn's advice though and give the radiator a good cleaning. The oil mist from the blow by bottle turns the radiator into a dirt magnet.

Keep in mind that the transmission will be producing more heat with the additional power, and the air flowing through the radiator goes through the transmission cooler first. Maybe that'll raise the temps?

Mroidt I don't mind you being nosey at all. I just had the complete suncoast trans installed while I was on vacation in Panama City beach for the thunder beach bike rally. The trans was sick all the way there pulling an enclosed trailer with 5 Harleys, about 7k pounds. The converter was chattering bad and starting to slip, but we made it. The trip home was a dream with a solid trans. My truck had 104k, a lot of it towing the trailer or our boat, about the same weight. The shift points are set up perfect and firm. Pulling hard 80mph the temp never topped 160. Time will tell how it holds up, but I expect good things. Hope this helps. nice talking to you. :) Kevin
