German Speed Bumps

My son(12) had a bad bike fall a few days ago med flight to hospital E. R.

Big scrapes on 1/2 of face nose forehead, stitches in mouth, broke arm and nose. He is home and wound care is rough(painfull for him worse for me:{)

Need medical advice for the near and long term to help keep scarring to a minimum.

keep his hands clean and avoid any 'home dressings' not prescribed by physician. Wounds, and I've had plenty, do just fine. Abrasions are not the same as avulsions or puntures, the last two being more serious.

Muprocin is about it for staphlacocus. Good luck and keep pets and dirty clothes away. Don't Touch, however bad it itches. . Its hard on a young guy to be out of action. . but the young have great immune response.

Ask your doctor about 2. 5mg Zyrtec should the itching become unbearable for him. I know the normal dose is 10mg, but that's far more than most people need. I've found that 2. 5mg does a great job taking the edge off the itching, or squelching it completely, for a day or two. It might not be good for a 12 YO, though, so ask your doc.

When I was about 12 years old my brother was bitten in the face by a Black Lab( I know who would have thought) . Long story short it required a great plastic surgeon that just happened to be on watch that night in the E. R. and 37 stitches. I can still remember my Dad changing the bandages daily to keep the wound clean and moist(to minimize scarring). To this day you can't even tell that my brother was bitten. It sounds like you have a pretty good handle on things as far as wound care though. I know it can be a little tough when you have to see your little guy in so much pain but keep it up. It sure is different when its your own. I have seen some pretty bad stuff in my line of work and somehow family always comes through. Even family that is a bit squeamish. Oh yeah, did your son have a helmet on? I can't say enough good things about them.

brother took a face dive into a bridge on a bike around that age, did basicly the same as you are stating (no broken bones or stiches though) Just lots of tore up skin. You can barely even tell now, except that he cant grow facial hair on one side of his face, less shaving right? lol.

One big thing though, make sure that even when it looks healed, keep a natural based sun block on it for at least a year, and I mean all the time. It will help tremendously with the scaring. The sun will cause more scaring while its healing. So, keep it covered with sun block, even during the winter months.
