Factory (99) Tow Hitch

While taken a nap under the truck (checking the hitch for the recall webbing cracks) this weekend I noticed that the factory hitch tube is slightly bent towards the front. Is this normal or just another reason to go buy a real hitch? Just getting a little concerned before our 570 mile trip to Reno with the trailer later this month.

BV, if you mean the lateral, 2" box tube that the hitchbox is welded to then, NO my OE '98. 5 hitch was not bent. I say was, because I upgraded to a Reese Titan V (class 5) hitch after I had heard of DC's proposed fix if no cracks were found in the OE unit. I hauled my OE hitch to the dump last month. Guess they got me coming and going... I had to initially pay for the hitch, and then again to have it buried in a landfill. #ad
BV, have you thought of the possibility that someone may have backed into your hitch?

John - The hitch still has the paint on it, bumper is not dinged and receiver has no marks so the back into or ran into option is not very feasible. I did however stop really, really, really fast about a year ago with a trailer (6x10 w/6'sides) full of very wet hardwoods. I went ahead and took it off and think a new hitch is in order - Pardon my french but forget the recall brackets.

I plan on going to the Reese Titan V (class 5) hitch for the same reason as you. I have question. Is the receiver located in exaclty the same position as the OEM hitch receiver. I ask because I built the steps for my slidein camper and they use the receiver. Any difference in location would mean I would be to modify them. Just wondering.

BV - that's the hitch I installed. I especially liked the ratings. A legitimate 10K/1K WC rating. And the install used existing frame holes - just had to enlarge them a bit. The hitch does tuck up under the frame a bit closer than the OE one. I had to lower the ball mount to the last notches.

Hey Arlan, I believe the the centerline (in the horizontal plane) of both the OE and Reese Titan V hitchboxes are the same... or close. The Reese Titan V has a 2. 5" square hitchbox... I understand the 2" reducer is optional now although, the unit I purchased from Camping World came with it (free). Another design feature of the Titan V is the size of the lateral beam; most class III and IV hitches have a 2" beam with the 2" hitchbox welded to both beam halves with the aid of gussets, the Titan V use a 3", one piece beam with the center (2. 5" x 2. 5") cut out for the hitchbox. The hitchbox is welded around the entire periphery at both ends. A very strong, well thought out design. A very heavy-duty hitch extension is also an available option.

Another hitch you may want to look into Arlan, is the Super Hitch by Torklift ( www.superhitch.com ). Although, I really like my Reese Titan V, I feel the best hitch for those hauling a long camper THAT REQUIRE AN EXTREME-DUTY HITCH EXTENSION is the Torklift Super Hitch. The Super Hitch is a Class 5 hitch that has (qty. ) 2, 2" hitchboxes in a stacked configuration. The hitch extension utilizes both of these hitchboxes to provide verticle stabilization as well as carrying capacity. A chain angling away from each side of the rearward end of the hitch extension provides lateral stabilization. I have three friends with this hitch and they ALL love 'em! #ad
