I have asked this question before, but have not really gotten a firm answer... so trying again...

... does anyone have a specification for the weight capacity ratings of the factory 17" aluminum wheels? I have checked inside when the tires were off. I have checked on the backside of the rim. I see no data.

Thanks.

Thanks for the reply. I forgot about Ken's webvsite (he sure has a lot of good info... ) I will look more there...

... but I was looking for the weight carrying capacity of the wheel, not the actual weight.

Well, I guess I'm on crack. I looked and looked and can't find it. I know I read it somewhere... they said it was only 2850 or somewhere around there.

I think that they are rated less than the steel wheels... is that why only steel wheels come from the factory? They would have to at least match the Load Index of the tires?

Guess theres not much point in me getting tires rated for 3900lbs then is there! :-laf

they can't be rated that low, the rear axle weight limit is 6200 lbs. at least it was on my 3500srw. the ratings are based on the weakest components. 6200/ 2 =3100 so the rims have to be at least 3100lbs weight rating. I thought they were rated @ 3200 ea.

That was the issue in the thread I was reading... Guys looking for high rated tires and other guys saying what's the point if the wheels are only rated for xxxx lbs... .

:-{};)

I tried searching the tire and wheel threads... trouble is, there's about a billion of those! But it is quite interesting that Dodge has the ratings for the steel wheels but not the aluminum.

I am not looking for higher rated tires...

... I have stock size tires on both steel (winter) and aluminum (summer) rims. I am just right at the rated rear axle weight with my camper and I am confident that the winter tires on steel rims are OK.

I want to put the summer boots on (which are already mounted to the aluminum rims... ) and just want to be sure that the wheel/ weight is OK too.

Yeah, another guy on cumminsforum had the same issue and question and never did get an answer. Basically it was the same answer wherever I've read: "The axle is rated for xxxx lbs. , so the alloys have to be at least that. " But it's weird the specific rating can't be found. I'd also like to know.

it would be a safe assumption that the rear axle weight rating is based on the rims. the factory tires are rated @ 3195 ea. so we know the tires aren't the limiting factor. the axle and springs aren't either since the same setup is used in a dually.

I did not have that link when I was trying to find out the OEM weight rating. I asked a couple of the local (San Jose, CA) dealership parts dept's and no one knew the answer. The best explanation that I've heard so far is that if the OEM tires are rated at 3195lbs @ 80 psi then the OEM rims should be rated at 3200lbs.
