I'm kinda new to the Cummins diesel. I did have this tsb done to my truck a couple weeks ago. It hasn't been cold enough yet for it to work.

The question I have for those in the know, If the air temp reading is coming from the IAT, wouldn't the grid heater throw the sensor reading off? I'm not sure of the exact arrangement of the heater/IAT. Seems to me that if the grid heater kicks in, it'll warm the IAT up to above 32* pretty quick, unless it's real cold outside.

just a thought, any one else with any thoughts on this?

tx diesel

tx diesel: check out the very first post on this subject. The TSB number near the top of the page links to the TSB. All kinds of info there.

Hope this helps,

jeff.

Mschevey

Dealer called me again said they will not change the

speed sensor. they want to diagnose the truck again.

so I didn't do any of the sensors.

I will drop the truck off Sunday evening,

and it better be done Monday after work

or I'll get me a new truck! (lemon law)

I like the pretty red one on the lot! :)

They keep saying mine is the ONLY truck they're

having trouble with. why don't I believe them... Hmmmm

It is snowing as I write this so I'm real sure it will be cold

enough tomorrow morning for this thing to work.

I though about plugging it in but I want to give it one more

try. . we'll see

PKozlowski: I gather from the lack of a exuberant post telling of the feature working, that there has been no change to the lack of function? It still has not been anywhere near cold enough lately for this to even try to work lately. (Indian summer)

Texas Diesel: Did you get the files I sent? If so did they help at all?

Has anyone had any insights into this feature or got it to actually work? What is the part number for the IAT sensor for a 2001. 5 HO?

(Lots of questions, very few answers. )

cold wx

It has been more then cold enough here

for it to work. It still doesn't.

It is scheduled to go into the DC shop

Monday for more diagnosis.

I'm not holding my breath.

I have been in touch with an attorney

about the lemon law. he said I have grounds.

I will let you guys know if it works

once I get her back.

Still no reply from cummins on this issue

We have had enough cold here to set this off but no luck.

Cummins has not responded to my email questions about their part of the program.

I am convinced that we are on the bleeding edge of this issue.

I am also confident that we will all benefit from out TDR membership when someone figures out how to make it work!!

FYI: I started a new free website portal for our favorite hobby, it is still getting shaped up but feel free to check it out.

Maybe the TSB was released prematurely or some other programming update is not compatable with it. It is disappointing when the hype turns to gripe. I just hope nobody's ECM suffers damage or problems later. If D-C does not know how to get it to work, will they know how to remove it???

With all the nonworking reprogramming I decided to get the high idler kit from Practical Solutions. Eventually DC will get their act together and get all the bugs out of the software to make the option work.

David_VT: What e-mail address are you using for Cummins?

Everyone:

Maybe if everyone from the TDR who had this done sent an e-mail to both DC and Cummins we would get their attention. It gets real annoying to have a few hundred people send an short simple e-mail every 1 hour.

For legal reasons no threats or excessive ‘bashing’!, just a simple two line message. First telling them that we just want to make them aware of the issue and second asking for a timeframe for a workable solution.

This may not get DC to do anything but refer us back to the Stealers, but it will get Cummins attention. And they don’t want a Blemish to their name from a bunch of pickup owners.

Just a thought.

Just talked with Cummins

I just got off the phone with Jerry @ Cummins, about the fast idle TSB. His take on the subject was that as long as your grid heater are working the fast idle may not kickin. He said the grid heaters warm the intake air up to 100 deg's, but he was going to ask one of the enginers to make sure. He said you could unhook your grid heater to see if the TSB is insalled and working. But he thought the temp would have to get well below 0 for it to work. He is going to call me back after he talks with the Enginers. Hope we get a good answer to this question soon.

powermaster@cummins.com is the email address

Good luck with the cummins human contact, shows a little promise.

The email is posted above is anyone wants to try that method. I strongly urge you to mention the new software early in the message or you will get the canned idle email message I got.

I would like to revisit one discovery I made earlier. I am more convinced that it is relevant and would love to have others verify the same finding:

When I start in very cold weather I am getting the ABS light coming on after ignition, the behavior is not the same when the temperature is warmer

Granted it may have something to do with the voltage swings when the grid heater is running, but it may have something to do with the zero speed indication part of the idle algorithm??

The ABS light will not come on during 'wait to start' or long after if I fail to kick the starter. All the other test lights have long since cycled by that time.

Anyone else see or think they see this???

David

at least think of yourselves as being lucky enough to need this...

I live in Texas and it is still in the 80-90's here. Sure wish you would send some of that cool weather our way.

AJB

OKay, Here is how my dash lights operate:

cold start;

1. Turn key on most light are on

2. ~2 sec. most lights go off (not ABS)

2. ~3 sec. ABS light goes off

3. ~3. 5+ sec. Wiat-To-Start goes off

Start engine

4. ABS light comes back on for ~1. 5-2 sec.

Warm start;

Same as above except Wiat-To-Start light goes out in about 2. 5 sec.

If I start it at this point the ABS light doesn't go off untill the engine has been running about 2 sec. However if you wait a extra second the ABS light goes off untill you start the engine and then comes back on for 2 sec.

David_VT: Are you sure that the light dosen't come on, go off, and then come back on when you start the engine?

TxDieselKid: I'll take the current 30-40* high temp anytime over 90*s

Mike

Sorry for the long post.

Cummins responce

I sent a message to cummins this morning. Here is the respone I received back.

{Summary: ram cold weather idle up feature

Solution:

Thanks for your E-mail message. We apologize for our delay in responding.

The air temperature reading comes from intake air sensor located in the intake manifold. What you are saying may be right? We know very little about how this idle up feature has been working. It may be totally software. Dodge will be the company that will have to work on your problem. Our distributors do not have the software for this feature. }

Sounds like we are on our own and that the IAT sensor is what is probably messing this up. That was my main question, what sensor was used to get the air temp. reading.

Mike

:(

false alarm on the ABS

Guess it's not using the overhead console!!

I might pull the grid heater power to see if this will work.

Question, does the grid heater continue to cycle after the truck is running and warmed up? I don't recall if you leave the truck running for say 30minutes, will the grid heater keep cycling or not? (I know, we should not run for 30min)

Perhaps the problem is just one of false expectations. Maybe this high idle will only work if the grid heaters fail or something like that? who knows... . :D

MSchevey, I think you are right on with the ABS, just another dead end there. :(

The puzzle continues

Yes it does continue to cycle even when warm....

I have the PS Grid Heater System Saver which actually prevents the grid heater from cycling while the engine is warm. No need for it to cycle when the engine is warm. Gets more life out of the heater itself, batteries & alternator.

CUMMINS READ THIS!

I'll make this really quick since I'm pretty PO'd

at Dodge and Cummins!

Dodge can't figure out my truck STILL!

Called Cummins who was worthless, totally wasted phone

call.

Well Dodge said they have to keep my truck until it gets

cold again. Asked them if there was anyway to 'fool' the

sensors. OH no... can't do that, don't know how...

Well figure it out!!! Geeesh! what a bunch of idiots!

And figure out why I keep getting a speed sensor error!

Called Cummins. trying to find a little help from them.

maybe have them tell me to take it to someone who

knows what they're doing. Nope! Basically don't warm

it up, just drive it! basically WE Cummins owner

don't know anything is what he told me, all of us idle

them to long. Thanks for all your help!

Going to call an attorney in the morning to see what

can be done. I'm done playing games with this fools!

Wonder if I can find a CAT for my truck! :)

Dave Fritz, any contacts?

Dave Fritz,

Do you have any contacts who might be helpful?

If DC saw the amount of attention this thread is getting, some might think that would get the issue some attention inside their engineering community.....

Ah, so close...
