COST

3dracer: I was charged $6. ++, the cost of the labels. They didn't charge for the flash, although they showed on the screen where it wasn't a "covered charge". I have 66,000 miles on my '01.

My hi-idle hasn't worked yet, but I can't bring myself to not plug it in, either. It did seem to up the idle speed at all times, slightly.

I stopped by the dealership today and this is what I found out. First off, both the cold weather drivability and cold idle engine warming TSB's are for both ETC and ETH ECM's. Supposedly the update would not be allowed by the ECM if designed for it. Being a computer guy by trade I tried to get details on exactly how the ECM controls this but the dealership could not give me anymore of an answer. I hope this helps you

cold weather blues...

Well, I just got back from yet another dealership, and they said my ECM HAS been flashed for this TSB and it IS enabled. It hasn't worked yet, and it's been cold enough for several weeks. I tried to explain to the guy that maybe the speed sensor is faulty or maybe the throttle position sensor, but he said in either case the check engine light would come on. But only if they didnt work at all right? He had no reply. Now what ? Where do I start, and what can I check myself? I have checked my codes... nothing there.

I got my truck last Friday but the wrm doesn't seem to work. I went to the dealer and they said there was no recall on my truck. He said it was still showing up as new and unsold so wait 2 weeks till it gets in the system as sold. I lokedfor the production date on the oor but didn't see anything on any door except black label 2"x3" approx. What date did they start doing this automatically? Thanks!

It's their problem!

My attitude to this issue is that if it doesn't work it's THEIR problem. Your approach to the dealer should be "you installed the reflash, it doesn't work, fix it". "Call me when it is fixed".

End of story!

I find that most people including dealers and their reps like to do the easy things in life and to take on something that forces them to "think" meets with resistance. To overcome this resistance it is sometimes necessary to take a forceful approach.

Good luck!

Right on man...

The old saying goes... "Youll catch more flys with sugar than you will with vinegar" But I don't want flys, I want the damn HI IDLE! I tried to explain the the guy several time that if it was already enabled it should have worked every day for the last 3 weeks. Wouldnt you think by now, since these engines have been out since 98. 5, that these guys would know them and their ECM's inside and out? Maybe their is ALOT more to it than I think.

Mine's a loser too.

Add mine to the list of trucks that the feature doesn't work on. I had the re-flash done quite a while ago. But, I haven't had a chance to really test it until this week during the holidays. I went up to way northern Minneesohtah where it was -6 degrees Faherenheit (that's D**N COLD for you Canuks). Started the truck. No fast idle. I know it's in and enabled. It just doesn't work for my truck. I'll try to get it to work, but I've now discovered some other flaws in my truck brought on by the cold weather (sticky e-brake solenoid, jello in the PS pump, fickle lift pump). I've got my work cut out for me. I'll get to the ECM thing eventually. Unless, someone else gets there first.

How many have the balls to leave their ride with DC??

Not me or most!I've seen what they do to customer's truck"S!I won't even let them open the hood.

No matter how you look at it we have to make it their problem.

I was in northern ALBERTA for a few days and the local DC nut said that new software is due mid JAN. WAS he trying to blow me off or did he know that a cure was on it's way?

Guys,

Mine works. It worked once around the end of November, and then I had seen some codes set, never resolved that one, anyway, I thought it had quit working. In the last week, it has been cold enough when I started the truck that it has engaged 2-3 times.

In my tests, the parking brake has no effect, at least releasing the brake does not stop the high idle. Stepping on the service brake pedal does release high idle. The other thing that you all might be missing is a wait time. On my truck anyway, I would guess 2+ min. after a cold start does it start to idle up. The idle up is sort of stepped, it doesn't just boom, go 1200 RPM. Also I notice it needs to be a solid 32° or less. My driveway faces West, so the sun is on the South or drivers side of the truck. My understanding is that the OAT (outside air temperature) sensor is the battery temperature sensor under the left battery. This being the case, I think there is enough solar warming of the battery sensor to not always trigger the high idle, in close to freezing temperatures. After dark, or considerably below 32° the solar warming is probably not a factor.

It definitely sounds like some of you may be having a problem, but in borderline temperatures or cases of solar heating, it may just not be the right conditions, yet. Hey, I was about ready to take mine back in, when I started seeing some action again. I have no input on the 3 cylinder operation, it definitely has not been that cold this winter.

For those with the ETC/ETH question, mine is an ETH produced in the fall of 2000, and IT DOES work.

Hope this helps you guys with questions.

anyone w/out extreme cold package?

From glancing at the posts, it appears that the people with the "extreme cold weather" TSB are having better luck with high idle working. Does anyone without the above TSB (I forget the #) have their high idle working??? Headed back to the dealer with mine later this week. Ray

I'm going in Wednesday, what are the two TSB #'s?

One was for the high idle and the other was for cold weather driving enhancement. Looked back through the older parts of this thread and someone said one of them was the wrong TSB #. Could some one who has had one or both give me the correct #'s? Thanks

TSB #'s

The TSB 18-015-01 is for cold weather hard start/ poor performance. The TSB 18-019-01 is for the high idle/ 3 cylinder idle. The diesel guy at one of the area dealers (who couldn't help me either) told me TSB 18-015-01 cuts the fuel back at start up to helps the engine start easier. <Take it for what its worth.

Add mine to the list of trucks going back to the dealer this week. Mine goes in first thing friday and I will be waiting and watching everything they do.

Its been well below 15 deg most mornings for the past week and a half and nothing. I know the TSB is installed and the 3 cyclinder feature is enabled. But I get nothing. No High idel at all, and no three cyclinder operation.

I was going to start to diagnose this myself but decided not to. Let them figure it out. The truck is only 10 months old and with all the warrenty issues I decided against working on this myself. I am thinking about mentioning the lemon law to them. This is the 4 or 5 time to the dealer and absolutely no change. Has any one done this? If so what was the dealers reaction?

We were in Ellensburg Snowmobiling this weekend. It was 29 degrees Saturday morning (coldest morning), idled 10 or 15 minutes, no fast idle. Maybe later in the winter!

One of the guys went to CFN and pumped 4. 5 gals of gas in his Power Joke last night. I towed him back to the motel and this morning we bought a electric fuel pump at Schucks and some hose and pumped the tank out, then I towed him back to the diesel pump.

I had the reflash done for the fast idle done about two months ago. I was the first one that the dealer had done. It still hasn't worked yet and it was down to 3 degrees F two nights ago. Should I take it in to get it redone in case something wasn't right the first time? Anything that I should check before I take it back? Thanks for any help.

Take it back.

The first attempt with my truck didn't work either. Upon returning it to the dealer they reloaded the fast idle program and it works great now.
