Loss of Power-1/2 tank of fuel

Hello All;

I am a little confused about Dodge factory fuel filters.

I read in Issue 56 that there is a 7 micron fuel filter (FS19800) available and approved for use in my truck. I went into the local Dodge dealer and he did not recognize the FS part number above at all. Is the FS19800 a Cummins part number? When this very helpful parts guy looked up the proper fuel filter for my truck he said there was only one listed. But he could not tell me if it was a 7 or 10 micron filter.

Can anyone help clear up my confusion? If the FS19800 is indeed a Cummins part number, where do I go to get one? Am I correct in assuming that almost any dealer that displays the Cummins emblem would stock them?

Thanks for any and all clarifications.

OEM fuel filter

At least on my 04. 5 the OEM filter was 10 micron. Not nearly enough. With all the junk in the fuel these days you need a 2 or 3 micron.

I would agree that dropping to a 2 or 3 micron filter would be beneficial to keeping junk out of my injectors, but at what cost? Will my in-tank pump be able to push enough fuel through a 2 micron filter to keep my CP3 happy? What happens when it starts to get cold outside? I sometimes work where temps can drop to -40F. Would the installation of a 2 micron filter require me to preheat my fuel at those temps?

So many questions, and I don't know where to go for all the answers! I sure hope the collective wisdom here can keep me from going crazy.

The new fuel filters are suppose to be 7 micron. 10s might still be out there. Baldwin makes a 5 micron which I now use. Bosche calls for a 5 micron. Some after market are a 2 micron but requirs a much larger filter for more fuel flow at this micron level. Genos has 7 microns and you can get a autoparts store selling Baldwin to order in some 5s.

In my opinion, the dealership is the last place you want to buy any filter because of their high price.

If that is your only choice however, ask to look at the filter. If the ends of the filter look like rubber and are very thick (about 1/8"), it's the old 10 micron. On the new 7 micron filters, the ends are a much thinner plastic material.

As others have said, the old 10 Micron has been superceeded by the newer 7 micron. But I felt that wasn't good enough, especially after hearing all the warantee horror stories about denial of warantee due to contaminated fuel.
I did this

Easy install and 2 micron. Fuel pressure guage between the filter and CP3. Runs around 9 PSI up to 55 mph and running down the interstate around 8 psi. I've seen as low as 7 PSI pulling ~7500 lbs in the mountains.

The 7 micron filter filter from fleetguard is FS19856, Biodiesel compatable version of the FS19800E. Fleetguard is owned by Cummins and naturally gets all the latest updates. Fleetguard's hotline 1 800 filters, Cummins hot line, 1 800 diesel, give'em a call.

10,7,5 micron are NOT enough

Or, buy an extended warranty because you're gonna need it. As for the stock pump,... it's like taking a walk in a mine field,... it's not IF, it's WHEN,... because it's not to be trusted.

Get a FASS or GDP and go 2 or 3 micron and never look back. Simple.

Thanks for all the info everyone.

I am leaning towards the FASS system. Seems to me one install will cover several issues. Plus mounting on the frame rail gives real easy access for changing filters, etc.

Do you recommend running a larger pump with that filter. Cause our truck runs at high altitude with lots of ups and downs with a near 16,000# trailer for most of the summer! Also does GDP have a filter for the 02 CTDs.

If you go FASS,... the 150 would do you nicely. Unless you have a race only rig it will be more than you'll ever need. RC Cox was making in the 800hp range with a FASS 90 and now he runs a FASS 200,... I believe and he's close to 1200hp.

Also I really love my current setup which I got from GDP. The reason I like it so much is that Richard can custom design it for you and your specific needs and is pricing is very fair for what you'll get and the quality of kit. I had Richard design it with a high side/low side pressure valve which is so simple,. . it sits right under the back sear by the frame rail on the drivers side of the truck so I can just kneel down and turn the knob and I can go that quickly from 27psi to 54psi depending on my needs and what I'm trying to do with the truck.

I'm sure Brad from FASS could design the same thing if you want to go that way. Both those guys are great to deal with and have super products. You can't go wrong either way. But you do need more than just a 2 or 3 micron filter and that's why I recommended the FASS or GDP and then you have a setup that will perform. There are many guys that have moved these setups on two or even three trucks they've owned. That's quality.

Good luck.
