trailer wireing

2nd trans cooler

I am personally towing trailers for a living right now and I started out with the stock hitch and bars. I now don't use the bars and I was not able to see much if any difference. I do have air bags. I find for me it's just a hassle setting them up and not worth it since I tow all different kinds of trailers all the time.

If yer gittin' the bags anyway, then throw in the class V hitch and forget the bars.

Wouldn't run the class 4 hitch without bars though - simply because of the liability issues if you get into an accident.

Just a question related to the hitch discussion going on here. No matter how much you pull or how strong the actual reciever is, they all depend on that little 5/8" pin. Just how strong is the pin, does anyone know the rated strength of it? I have never seen any different ratings for them they all just kind of seem alike. Thanks

The good ones are rated at 30K based on what I was told by the folks at Magnum the locking type is rated at (shear strength).

Ok, finding a class V hitch isn't hard. Now how about a class V receiver and ball? I need something with about 5" of drop.

I only know that a friend of mine borrowed my truck to move his 20 foot haulmark around the block (he bought a longbed when I bought his shortbed, and couldn't put it in the alley) And his little trailer sagged my truck more than my 33 foot fifth wheel. (race stuff in his. . tire machines, compressors, tires, etc)

that thing had to be WAY overloaded. no bend to the hitch. . I don't recommend overloading, but nice to know the truck could take it. I hate bumper pulls, and so to me it is not an issue. I love my fifth wheel, none of the stability problems.

It sounds to me as though you are mixing up some of the terminology. The receiver is attached to your rig. A ball is attached to a mount (also called ball mount or drawbar) that is inserted into the receiver.

You can find find a receiver, ball mount, and ball, all that handle 15,000 pounds, at this site: http://www.putnamhitch.com/

If the place sells the reciever, they SHOULD also sell the mount.

And the weight rating doesn't depend on the pin. the only thing the pin does is keep the mount from sliding in and out. it has NO job as far as holding the weight. You can put a max load trailer on the ball, and remove the pin (I've done it).

it is only for keeping the mount from sliding in and out during braking and acceleration, and during those time, the full weight of the trailer won't be seen by the pin.

the close fit between the mount & reciever, as well as the lenght of engagement of the two is the key for weight ratings. that's why a class V mount is solid, not hollow like the lower classes.
