Factory shock replacement/options

What are some good shocks to replace the factory ones with? Would like to get rid of some body roll and wanted to here some thoughts about some after market ones.

You really can't go wrong with Bilstein 5100 series. Pro Comp MX-6 shocks work very well too, as do many reservoir types (Fox, King, Pro Comp, Bilstein, etc). Just stay away from any hydraulic "white shock". Yes, they're cheap, and yes they're junk. I have heard mixed reviews about Edelbrocks on CTD trucks. I had them on a '98 Jeep TJ and they were terrible in that application.



BTW, I had a set of Monroe Reflex's on my last CTD. They actually weren't that bad for the price, slightly better than stock.

I got the Bilstein 5100 series from Genosgarage and put them on last week. They are really nice. Stiffened up the ride so now it feels like a truck. (I found many threads on here from peeps who didn't like the stiffened ride). They will fix your "roll" for sure. I highly recommend them.

I just got my Bilsteins from Geno's Garage. They are re-valved (or engineered) and the ride has been impressionable. This truck behaves totally different, not bottoming out, no lean in curves and smooth as silk on highway expansion joints, dirt roads even washboard are no problem.



Hope these shocks are not back ordered (took a while). Recommend these for sure. call them up and talk to anyone (I spoke with Ben he is really knowledgeable) order them you won' regret it.



Install on the fronts are a real PIA :{ , drivers front take out the battery and passenger side front the stabilizer bar. Backs are easy done in no time.

I switched to Rancho 9000Xs soon after I got my truck. I have been running them for 60,000 miles now and am satisfied with their performance. They are adjustable and do give a little flexiblity in ride depending on load or use.

I switched to the 5100's when I installed the KORE kit. The easy way to do the shocks is to remove the bottom shock bolt, then remove the 3 bolts holding the top shock mount and pull the bracket and shock out together. The shock will expand, but you can put pressure on it/bracket to slow down the process. Take the old shock and bracket apart, assemble the new shock and bracket, drop into the spring, install the bottom bolt, press down on the shock and install the 3 bolts that hold the bracket. Takes about an hour if you putter your way through it.

The 5100's are great shocks. However, they don't offer a front shock for a stock height truck. The Bilstein 4600 series is available for the stock trucks.

Hey Buddy,



For the shocks I would recommend the HD seires bilsteins since they are now available for our trucks and there have been recent treads on the subject which you can search for. NOW for the body roll you mention, shocks will not solve that problem. Go ahead and get the Helwig sway bars for the front and rear... ... . then you will virtually eliminate the roll. I also have them on my truck and can tell you that the rear sway bar by far will make your truck handle a lot better.

Bilstiens site shows AutoZone as the only supplier in a 100 miles radius, but Autozone doesn't know anything about them :-{}



I have a Summit 50-60 miles away in Columbus, but their site doesn't show any options either

Thanks, I'll book mark that for future use (I've been doing about 100,000 miles a year). I didn't think the factory shocks were all that bad, but I'd like some Bilsteins eventually.



I think I have one broke and my Dodge dealer can have me a set of four tomorrow for $225 out the door.



If it aint a busted shock, I've got something else banging around in the front end resonating through the steering column :{

It is post # 19. And one more thing. . for 225, a few more dollars and you get the bilsteins just to let you know, I think like 280 but I don't have my invoice here.

True enough, but I'm pretty sure I've got a busted shock and I can't wait for weeks. I use this truck to make a living and I need to get my hands on shocks sooner than the Bilstein deal is looking like. There is always next time around. Or I can buy Bilsteins and take these new OE shocks off and keep as spares. It's all good.

I used the Rancho 9000's on mine for about 2 weeks. I purchased them because I occasionally haul a 9' slide-in camper and needed some more (alot more) control. I set the rears at 9 and the fronts at 6 with the camper loaded. I was not impressed. They seemed to lack any form of tire control. Empty or loaded, the tires seemed to hop through the bumps at both the lower and higher settings. I suspect this was because they are a hydro shock; and not nitrogen charged. I installed my lift (see sig) and it came with Bilstein 5100 series shocks. I can say that the wheel hop is gone. Empty or loaded, they are outstanding. Like previously stated, if your goal is to reduce body roll, install a swaybar. If you want a better ride and improved road manners, buy Bilsteins.



And yes, I know I'm crazy for hauling a 9' slide-in with a 5" lift and 37's Oo.

I take a lot of parts off that I think may be going bad and keep as a spare. I don't do maintenance, but prevetative maintenance sometimes. A used spare always works in a pinch, and being broke down on the road with a load of horses just plain sucks!!!
