I pulled the passenger door panel off my truck, and then for kicks and giggles pulled the speaker out. Now I thought these trucks have an amp on the speakers. Mine doesn't seem to have an amp because I can follow the wires (from where the two spade clips connect to the speaker) all the way to where they go into the door jamb area and there is no amp. The other thing I was worried about is the brand of speaker that is in there is a Rampage. I have never heard of these. Is this the brand that Chrysler uses or some cheap crap someone put in before I got the truck?

Thanks in advance.

Will

Somebody swapped the speakers. The factory speakers are marked with a part number only (for the base system) or they have an Infinity label for the uplevel system. Plus, the factory speakers do not use spade terminals.

I used the search feature for "aftermarket speakers" and from what I understand the amps on the front speakers are supposed to run the rear speakers also. But I have no amp on the front speakers, and my rear speakers work just fine. I have the base stereo not the Infinity, so do I still have the amps on the speakers?

Can I replace the front speakers (with better quality speakers) without an amp again. They get plenty loud, but do not have much bass. I don't want the truck to vibrate from bass but I want to be able to turn it up and feel the bass.

That is about as clear as mud.

Thanks

Thanks for the reply. I guess now I am going to start looking for speakers. I was reading that people were putting 6. 5" speakers in instead of the factory 6x9. Something about the 6x9 are a bad design and don't give as good of sound as a round speaker. Will I get better sound and bass out of a 6. 5" speaker?

Thanks

Will

Round speakers are generally better in terms of distortion, as a circular cone is more rigid. 6x9s generally have better bass, however, since they usually are designed with higher excursion. You would probably be perfectly happy with a good quality 6x9.

I have seen advertisements for 2 way, 3way, or 4 way speakers. What is the difference? What makes one better than the other?

Thanks

Will

The "way" of a speaker refers to how many discrete elements it has. A 2-way speaker will have the woofer and a tweeter. A 3-way will have the woofer, a mid, and a tweeter. 4 ways usually have woofer, mid, and two tweeters which is plain silly. A good 2-way is all you should need.

As far as I know, most 6x9's are too deep to fit in the door. I replaced mine with 6. 5's and had to make a adapter out of some lexan I had. I may be wrong, but just giving you a heads up.

I put Polk 6x9's in the front and Polk 6. 5's in the back. Worked out good. I think the depth issue depends on the speaker.

I've got pioneer 3 way 6x9's in the doors of my truck... no problems and it sounds great... . the 10's under the back seat don't hurt either though...

If you want a little extra bass, an easy way to do it is to get an amplified "Bazooka" tube. I had one in my '98 and it improved the bass without packing too much of a wallup. Only problem was that the 10" wouldn't fit under the QC seat in back, so I had to leave it setting out from under it. An 8" probably would have worked fine.
