I posted this on the 911 forum but thought I might get more response here. I really need to help on this decision.

Help-98 engine failure/What to do?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I need some help from the TDR members in deciding what to do. Cummins has my truck and has told me there has been a major problem in the engine requiring a new/rebuilt motor. Here is where I need help. The truck has 260,000 on it. It is an automatic. My concern is that do I spend $5000 plus in putting in a new motor with all the other components having that much mileage or just bite the bullet and look for something newer? I don't know how long automatics last and I'll bet their expensive. Even with the rebuilt engine, I will still have the VP44 with the high mileage and every thing else.

Please help me decide. I use the truck daily in my business so Budget rental is loving me every day.

Thanks for any input.

That has to be a personal judgement sort of decision - the truck with a blown engine is WAY down on trade-in or resale value - but unless you have LOTS of expensive aftermarket stuff in/on it, trading for new MIGHT be best - much depends on your personal finances.

Nearly impossible for anyone to offer meaningful and informed advice based upon available info... Good luck, whatever you decide.

IMHO. If it were me and the truck was doing ok and the only problem is a down motor, replacing it would be what I would do. On my budget I can easily justify 5k rather than 30k plus on a new truck. If you are worried about the VP44, why not put a new one on when the motor is replaced. It is ultimately up to you what to do and your money, but like I said if the only thing wrong is the motor and you can get away with spending 5 or 6k and keep a truck you allready know everything about, then why not. Good luck.

Rcaldwel, I have an engine, and it runs great. Where are you located? E-mail me. -- email address removed --
