My '98 laid down Friday at 135k. I felt it loose power on the way to work, then die at a light. By the time I got to the store it was idling ok. I had to stop & pick up some parts for work, so I drained a little fuel from the filter & it looked good. I left the store & made it about a block & it lost power & died. I could vent the filter, pump up the primer & get it to restart, but die eventually.
I checked the filter (had about 6k on it) & it looked good. When I pulled the lift pump the rod was in, like the spring had failed. A new lift pump from Napa & all is well. I changed the lift pump through the wheelwell by removing the tire & the inner fender. Doing it this way you do not have to remove the starter & you can actually see the fuel fittings. I trimmed the inner fender like the 4WD's are before I put it back so I'd have access if it ever happens again, especially on the side of the road. Plan on replacing the 1/2" rubber fuel line from the heater to the lift pump. I used about 9" & made a loop to replace the formed elbow. By the way, you guys with '98 12V's will have to ask for 1997 or Napa will try to sell you a 24V pump.....
