I would think if they really wanted to be nasty, they could call in that the truck had no cat. That whole tampering with emissions thing is going to start raising its ugly head more often, especially in cash-strapped states. Good luck getting one back on.

Thanks!

Removing the cat and placing a straight pipe hardly 'tampering'. Those that are hollowing out there cats and reinstalling, now thats trickery! :-laf

The cat's are very effeient and testing has shown only a 2-4 rwhp increase. . on a stock truck. When I removed mine the only benefit I saw was a quicker cool-down.

Diesel cat's aren't like automobile cats and really have little effect on smog producing gases.

If the truck is tuned (doesn't look like the OP is) the added soot/flow and decreased EGT's (of some tuners) is very hard on the cat and they can plug easier.

Cali models had a cat in 03-04, just not the 49 state version.

This is interesting, I've often wondered the specifics of a diesel cats function v a gasser. Also, wonder how much NOX, CO2 and other gasses a diesel actually discharges.

You're right not tuned, and if I stay in CA any longer, I might have to stick to the motobike!

what you don,t like clean air. put the cat on. how much power are you getting 3 hp. k

Love clean air! We'd actually have more of it if our trucks could be sootier since soot is a Solid particulate and falls back to the ground. Easier to sweep up, vacuum and contain IMHO ;)

Mine is an '06 and I only "had" a DPF, muffler and resonator on mine from the factory. I had pulled all that stuff off about a year before this smog BS and am now running a complete straight pipe into a 6" stack. I passed with flying colors..... mind you I went to a place that knew this whole smog thing is a joke and honestly they didn't even look under the truck, only inspection was under the hood. Sorry, I will not name the place as I would like to return there and pass my next smog check. There culd b lurking CARB jack wagons searching on here... .....

Funny thing is I picked up the truck from a dealer, used in NYS. However, it originally came from NC! :)

JGheen, I sent you a pm...

Do I need a K01 update before smog station test ?

What is the K01 update?

My 05 has never been to a dealership only when I bought it in Nev But it has the required Calif emmisions can't recall what that was called at the time I bought the truck new at Carson City Dodge

Question: This will be my first year to get it tested at a smog station Do I need a to go to a dealership before for a K01 update, I have done my own servicing and the truck only has 16K miles.

Mine passed with no issues. The whole thing is a farce. But then, this is CA.

When's the abalone dinner?
Only affordable abalone dinner is at Van Damme state park on the Central Ca coast. :) They can legally harvest them there for a limited season. We were camped there and the aroma drove me nuts. No invitation even after circling the camps several times. :)

Not to hijack this thread but I thought smog test is every other year ? I just got my registration renewal and says I need smog test again. What a bunch of crap

Found this:
Vehicles registered in areas subject to the biennial smog certification program are required to submit evidence of a smog certification every other renewal period. Starting January 1, 2005, owners of vehicles six or less model years old will pay an annual smog abatement fee for the first six registration years instead of being required to provide a biennial smog certification.

So if my truck was purchased new in 05/04 I should be biennial correct?

Somebody made a mistake with your paperwork. Must of been one of those nice DMV employee's behind the counter :)

Most 05s don't need it

And if you have a smarty the update is in their software

Do you mean I don't need the dealership to update my truck and I can just go straight to a test only smog shop, and donate 60 bucks to him so the can send off 8 bucks to state of Calif, for their share.

"Smog abatement fee"? That sounds like a PC way to lighten your wallet. New York has the same nonsense, but I don't think they have such a fancy name for it.

Everyone that came by our campsite we always feed, Ab, Salad & a beer. Now if the person or persons were female we would bring out the JD.

We camped just a bit north of Van Damme, Ab season Opens April 1st and closes end of Nov Limit last time I checked was 3 per day or in possession so we would grill up and serve to everyone so we could go out the next day and dive for an other limit. all

Yes..... if your truck NEEDED an update to pass you would have been mailed a recall notice... ... ... ..... assuming they have your info

I must have missed you. :) Living in San Diego, abs were plentiful during my childhood until it got picked clean as everywhere. Baja was another story. Complete ab dinner Mexican style was $2. 85 with a beer. It's pretty much picked out too. Van Damme was the only crowded campground on that trip. Sept 13-23,2009. Pretty territory!

Abdiver. .

We go to Ocean Cove out of Jenner, a bit south of Salt Point. I don't dive for them, but I do beg. No gold to offer though, beer and Jack for sure. Always around April 26. Look for the English Mastiff with the old farts hanging on.

Ok, so I kinda figured I would maybe fail, given that I did not have a cat. Anyone have a cat I could rent for a weekend?

I would go to wreaking yards, look for a truck and remove a CAT from an 05-07 model. Mine did not come with a CAT, I wish it did, my exhaust stinks, no smoke at all, just the smell. The CAT really works in reducing the diesel smell.

If your truck exhaust stinks its Injectors. Most CR are very clean,We leave them run in the shop all winter long, No smell Are you share its not the breather Tube getting into the Cab?

I really dislike the smell the cat makes, it seems to smell like coolant. My cat is napping in my attic and the truck smells like a diesel, it's not strong but is different that with the cat.

I don't miss the diesel smell of my '99. The CR's run much cleaner. My old truck would stink out the garage and the house if the garage/kitchen door was open.
