A neighbor of mine had this happen... ever hear of this?
"The service dept here just raised holy hell about the aftermarket plate. I cussed and cried and threatened to sue them but they wouldn't back off, so I had to take them seriously when they insisted that the plate caused the pump to fail by causing an "overfueling" situation. They wrote it up in a way that makes sense, because I said I was going to take it to my attorney.

Anyway, I ended up with a plastic baggy full of parts, copper o-ringd, copper washers, and the PLATE! The rebuilder said the Bosch pump had blown seals, too! If I thought the damned thing did'nt cause the problem, I would put it right back in. I may someday.

The pump is set to supply at something like 170 cc and with the plate it was delivering 252 cc. All greek to me, but I still had to write the check.

Maybe it's a question to ask someone at the TDR? What do you think?

Any responses or email direct if you don't want to post.

Rob, this is what I warn folks about, by not getting injectors, the added fuel flow creates pressure in the fuel pump. There is some expansion that takes place in the pumps and ultimately, failure.
This is not as prevelant in the later pumps, because of minor changes and the addition of 215 hp injectors. It is not at all uncommon, just not heard of on this board as much. Piers or Joe can give you pump pressure specs, stock vs plate if you need, and I can get them if I need to. Tell your friend to go see that 12 valve guru to the North, he'll set him up!

details:
It was a TST 8 plate, purchased and installed at BD dyno days one year ago. No injector change.
Other details... I would have to ask him tonight!

I just installed a #8 plate, and have the injectors that come stock on a 180 hp. Should I be concerned? Piers, give us the scoop would ya? I can't really afford a new pump right now, so should I put the 215's in my truck?

Rob;

Thanks for the posting (extra seriously). The #8 TST plate is what I plan to start with for the BOMBing to begin. I work with a Cummins mechanic on a daily basis. He does Thermoking work for us but we have talked many times on Cummins engines. WE've talked on utilizing the Cummins potential and that I want to change the fuel plate. He calls me a "hot rodder"? If it would cause any known problems, He would have told me. I'll ask again to be sure. He has connetions with 2 local pump rebuilders so I'll try get 2nd & 3rd opinions on this fueling issue.

Try get this info your local 5$hit dog (I meant Dodge) dealer?

Cheers;
John E

BTW: Cummins has made some real stinkers for engines and mostly V-8's, too. They learned, but the others..... PowerMax, uh, Stroke on, uh, PowerChoke, uh, something ike that?

There is an old man here that isn't a TDR member that has a 94 and has had the 230 HP plate since it his truck had 45K on it and then went to the 250 HP at 100K. The last time I talked to him he had 230K and had never changed anything else except the clutch. I say they are up in the night and they need to prove the plate caused the problem.

Rob,
What year is his truck? Some of the early P pumps had a broklem with cracking a barrel sleeve. Seen it on stock pumps as well as bombed pumps. Only ever seen it happen to the 160hp pumps though. Anybody with a 96 or newer pump won't have much to worry about & only a few of the earlier pumps had this problem. Stack'd-n-Jack'd is right though, if you have a 160 hp pump you shouldn't try and push too much fuel thru those little injectors. The 215's work great in those engines, without further modifications. Any bigger injectors than that though & you'll want to put in the bigger delivery valves so it will run nice and smooth. Unless of course you want to upgrade to a brand new 913 P7100, just happen to have a couple of those big boys for sale #ad

The dealer is feeding a line of BS. I have seen pumps putting out SEVERAL TIMES that much fuel and doing fine. As noted above, the 160 pump has given a bit of trouble, but does that even stock--the one I saw recently WAS totally stock. If it has a #8 it is probably a 175 or 180 hp pump with 230 hp uprate. This is quite safe and not the cause of the problem. BTW, the -913 pump is the 215 hp unit used on 1997-8 Rams. Sickly likes his -913 pretty well #ad
and sure as h--- isn't using stock fueling #ad
to get 609 hp.
