Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Fair price for a 94 engine?

A coworker of mine just last weekend bought a 94 5 speed dually Cummins and proceeded to total it last Friday night. He's talking about parting it out and if the engine isn't cracked I told him I would be interested in it for the parts for my upcoming 1st gen ppump swap.

Some things I noticed on it when I looked under the hood when he bought it was that the ID tag said 180 hp so I'm not sure if the gear case has been swapped due the dowel pin falling out at some time or if the entire engine was swapped to one from a newer automatic truck, i didn't really pay attention to the tag on the pump to see if it's still the 175hp version or indeed swapped.

What would be a fair price to pay him if it isn't ripped out of the motor mounts?

1. Hope he is ok. Trucks can be replaced.

2. Register the ESN with Quickserve and see what comes up. You get 3 or 5 free ESN's.

3. Always worth what someone is willing to pay. Depending on miles and the sort. I will throw an offer of $1500-$2000 which may seem low to some. But I base this on I have almost $3500 in replacing ancillary stuff, that's parts only, it a huge list and included a brand new turbo, starter, boots, cables, alt rebuild, vaccum pump rebuild, kdp, new front cover........ If it's a TX truck it most likely is in better shape then the northeast trucks up here so that puts you around $5500 for your project.

I try to work backwards from my project budget if there is one, and make a offer.
