2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Fair price to pay for a 2WD 12 valve?

I spotted a 2nd gen 12V-5speed 2WD standard cab on the back lot of a local repair shop this weekend that looks like it could use a home. It had a flat tire and looked like it had been sitting a while. I forgot to look at the mileage and except for a cracked windshield it was in fair condition. . I was going to call and make an offer but I was wondering what a fair price was and what I should look out for if I get a chance to test drive it.

I bought a '95 club cab long bed 5-speed with 83000 miles, rough paint, no rust and needed ball joints for $8000, it that helps you any.

Hey, no it wasn't from Katy. I got it about 1 1/2 yrs ago from near College Station.



I did just buy my 3500 from a guy in Katy about two months ago though.

I spoke to the owner of the truck today and got more info.

It's a 1995 with 290K miles and his asking price is $2700.

It was mostly highway miles doing deliveries and towing a trailer. He said the truck needs batteries and air in the tire. They stopped using it because they were concerned with the mileage.



What do you guys think? Is the price fair?

I'd buy it... jump it off and test drive it, there was a '91 in Waller, Texas not long ago w/ nearly 400k mi. and they were asking $4000... . think they got it too.



on edit: I did a quick Kelley blue book price w/ what you said, but w/ my zip code... price was over $5600... FWIW, my uncle's got a '93 with over 350k miles... still runs like a champ, all stock. :-laf

Take it for a drive. If it has no major leaks,vibrations or strange noises start at 2450 and work from there. Looks like you found a diamond in the rough. I like the 5 speed Check to make sure the timing case isn't cracked by the KDP. Take care of that as soon as you get it.

WOW even if it's a stripper with a few major dings and dent's I'd give $2700 for it!!



I just paid $9000 for my 4x4 with 351,000 miles.

Vaughn, I know what your thinking... . why does he need a 2Gen when he has a perfectly good 3Gen

I really wasn't looking but I tripped over this one. It should make a fun "play" truck that I can bomb pretty cheaply and not have to worry about the warranty. Plus the 12 valve motors sound so cool. If I get bored with it I should be easy to sell.

KBennet look at my sig. . . my '96 is replacing the '03! Love the '03 but I decided I was done with high truck payments. The '96 is paid for, that is very nice

I wouldn't mind not having any payments but I have to have a newer vehicle for work and when I need to take customers to lunch, or take our family of four, the four doors are really nice. The quiet CR motor is a plus as well. I figure that I have four more years of payments and if I keep it nice I will have a good clean truck that should give me years of good service. My plan is to keep the '04 for 10 years so I should have 5 years without payments. If I pick up the '95 it will be used for short trips to the store and goofin' around.



Vaughn, do you see any performance differences between the '96 and the '03? How about driving? I drove a '93 and I have driven my Dad's '98 and they seem to have more turbo lag. My Dad thinks my '04 drives very smooth.

Yes there's many differences between the two. The '96 has better throttle response and is smoother/more even drivability-wise but has a lot less power than the '03. The '96 is close to stock. '03 spools quicker and easier to shift thru gears faster. I prefer the 6-speed. The '03 drives more like a sports car and the '96 more like a real truck



I prefer the way the 12v sounds, more genuine diesel sound without a lot of clatter like the 24v.



The '03 really flies down the highway compared to the '96, you can sure feel the wind drag on a 4x4.



I'm having fun with the '96 and will have a lot more when it's back running again (head is off and at the machine shop for decking and valve job).
