Falls on its face AGAIN what i have done so far!

Here is a little run down. I would get to 20 psi of boost and the boost would drop to 0 and I would have this detonation type sound (like pinging in a gas engine but louder). I can immediately accelerate again only for it to dump at 20 psi.



I set the EZ to 0 and it worked fine max boost 27 psi. Changed the fuel filter and ran it again. with EZ on 0 it worked fine. Put EZ on level 4 worked fine all day FRIDAY!



Last night was trying to pass someone on the highway got on it and it tanked again. The truck doesn't die just loses all power. Set the EZ to level 3 same thing. Level 2 same thing. Level 1 same thing. Fixing to try level 0 but I don't think it is going to be an issue.



I searched on TDR about 3 hours last night. It seems this wouldn't be a sign of the lift pump because that sucker usually just dies out. I have no hard starting problems, it filled up the fuel filter fine when i changed it on Friday.



I am leaning towards the EZ being the problem. What do you guys think? Could it be the pop off valve? If so how would I know?

Remove the EZ and drive it stock, if it continues to do the same thing then it is not the EZ program, if it completely stops doing this then you know it is a problem with the EZ unit.

I hear you. It does not do it with the EZ on 0. But my bigger concern is that soemthing else is beginning to fail and I don't have a clue what it is .



The EZ raises the fuel pressure to dump more fuel so if it doesn't do it with the EZ OFF does that mean I have bigger problem coming down the line. If so, what?

Sounds like it is just the program at this point, if it not acting up at all during stock settings.



Check for external leaks in the fuel system, no codes is a good thing at this point, my bet with the little bit of description is the EZ program is acting up.



Keep tabs on fuel mileage, check your oil per the instructions in the owner manual to make sure you don't have fuel entering the crank case.



If your fuel mileage is in check, there is no fuel in your oil and you can't find any external leaks and it continues to run fine while in stock setting I think you will be OK, the only other thing that maybe suspect is your pressure relief valve if your box was supplying pressure as well as timing it might be getting weak.



You might try an independent diesel shop to test it to see if it is maintaining the spec pressures.

THAT sounds like the rail running dry. Could be the EZ also but hard to tell. Does it do it on all levels with the box on?

I am really beginning to think it is only the EZ acting up. I pulled the plug off the back of the fuel pump and the truck just dies. So, I do not believe it is the lift pump. The thing that was getting to me is sometimes I would hear it and sometimes I wouldn't. So, I had my wife turn the key off and on with my hand on it. And i could feel it pump for a split second.

What had me scared was the lift pump wasn't supplying enough fuel. If the EZ was malfunctioning suddenly it could make the engine defuel and could be giving me the same problem. But to me I would have thrown a code!



I didn't even get a code when I unplugged the lift pump and let it die!

If you don't have a fuel pressure gauge you don't know if the LP is supplying enough fuel with or without the box. You may not get a code with the fuel pump unplugged on a 03 but not positive.



As far as the rail pressure goes you won't know if you have enough pressure until you can monitor it also. Do some searching here. There are many posts about stumbling and the pop corn sound. A lot of times it happens with the box on but not in stock. Stock these trucks barely have enough fuel. Adding a box usually puts them over the edge unless you upgrade the fuel delivery.

Actually; sounds to me like your truck is going into limp home mode for a few seconds. Odd that it happens at about 20psi -- typically that type of symptom is the box shorting out or loosing power to it so the engine notices it's "outside of spec" and goes into limp mode. Check the power connection to the box.
