My Buddy's '02 has had a fan bearing go. I have found two posts that say that it is covered under warranty. I have given him the keys to my rig and he has it scheduled with an independant for tommorrow.

Does anyone know if it is covered under the engine warranty? I hope that we can save him a few bucks for Christmas and then he will join us.

The one on my 02 went out. It's a special bearing and not available at a typical bearing supply house. I had to get it at Cummins and they got 180 bucks for it. You'll need a press to install it too. The hub is a press fit.

It's not a special bearing. I went to the local bearing supply and had them order it.

$30. Anything more and you're getting ripped off.

Before you buy it from Cummins, go ahead and pull it and check with a bearing service. What can you lose?I had to replace the bearing on my son's 92 and Cummins wanted 125. 00, so i called the bearing shop in town and they got me the same bearing for 67. 00. Randy

DTroy- let me know where to get the bearings for $30, and I'll stock up, giving you a finder's fee to boot.

I need to look for the receipt.

I pressed it in at home. I copied the design of a harbor freight press and made my own. A little beefier though.

I found the receipt. The bearing was $30 and the shipping for UPS was $4. 20 cents.

And if I remember correctly, the only reason that I had to pay the extra shipping was because I needed the bearing in a big hurry.

It never came in time. I used a bearing off of another engine until my replacement came in.

You have a good idea with the finder's fee.

Maybe I should sell them to the diesel community... .

Regarding Bearings, Bearings are Universal, meaning Generic WORLD WIDE. For any bearing copy down the number (they all have a number) also the same for Seals, go to a Bearing House, if not, an Auto Parts store and ask for a new one, if asked what it came off, say you don't know, (may times your reply will dictate cost, ie. front wheel bearing off a Caddy. etc. ). Bearings are catalogued by Numbers as they are often used on many machines not even related to motor vehicles. Fact is, the Bearing or Seal number will give the total pedigree of it's use, RPM, Load Bearing etc, for Seals, Rotating, sliding, etc. Just say it came off a piece of machinery at the Plant and you need to replace it. Bearings in general have a at least 100% mark-up, or All the Traffic Will Bear. In general, if you go to a Bearing House they are for the most part Professionals and proud of their knowledge. If you fail to find any numbers or letters on the Bearing or Seal, take what's left of the Bearing or Seal, that will be a big help to them, and tell them the part it came out of, say if it was a fan they will assess the RPM, Load etc to approximate it's replacement, then judging by their talk, or questions, you can either say it's off an old engine with no visable nameplate, or the actual piece you took it out of. Also a Business Card is a big help, even if it's your own, or one to your own fancy.

I appreciate all of the replies. Unfortunately for my buddy he needed to get this truck up and running quick. He ended up getting the bearing throught Cummins West for $118. That is just the beaing. I am sure that it can be done for less. The part number on the original off of his 2002 is

NSK BD35-120USA 528

If anyone knows of a reliable and resonable parts house and has a number and approximate price, please post. It could save many of us quite a few $ in the future. I do know that NSK is a Chinese company and would prefer something made here in the USA. That is just me.

Post on my brothers.

Diesel Gunner thanks for that number, I gave my 2001 to my son, so we'll be prepaired if the event occurs. Also if trying to remove a stubborn outer race of a bearing, Blind Housing etc. put a one inch weld bead on the inside wait a minute or two and it should drop out. By the way, perhaps you miss the Onion Plant in Vaccavile, I've had many a Good Cry when working as a Construction Millwright there, the workers used to have a great deal of sympathy for eachother, crying all the time.
