Turbo housing question

I'm about 4 weeks from getting my truck,... and I got it BAD!
I've seen a lot of posts on the cold weather, what about the hot? Would these trucks do well with a manual fan switch like the big ones?
I've been wondering if there is a fan clutch out there (pneumatic) fit for the cummins, I know Horton makes a complete kit for the Dodge Cummins, but it is electric. It's probably stupid to fit a truck like this with a "pneu" clutch, but hey, where can we REALLY draw the line when we're talking about BOMB! #ad

Geez, do you fellas just not have any input, or what? I can't ever hardly get a response on this thing. Seems like I used to get a better response on the Chevy page, how about some input.
Just the facts ma'am.

Hi UK,

I just came across your post.

Ours trucks would definatlely benefit from an electro-magnetic fan clutch. You will get better mileage, engine is quietier, improved throttle response, much quicker warm up time and other benefits I can't remember right now. A Horton clutch wouldn't even engauge if it were during the winter months.

I pulled my OE fan off for the winter, and totally blocked the radiator. Best thing I ever did. The fan is not needed during the winter.

Everybody pretty much agrees the Horton Fan Clutch is nice. The only thing that turns most of us off is the 700 bananna price tag.

I'm pretty sure Horton is the only electro-magnetic clutch made for our trucks. Cyclone fan was supposed to have a Cummins B series fan clutch in R&D.

If you have the extra dough, buy one. I would in a heartbeat. #ad

PS: Good choice buying the Dodge over G* & F***. You won't be dissapointed.

I installed the Horton on my '94, worked great. I also installed an air conditioner pressure switch. Even in the winter your a/c runs while using defrost. Gotta have some airflow through the condensor or you will eventually overpressure the system and the seals will leak. I paid about $450 for mine from a local radiator shop.

Powder, was that a regular price or sale/used. It's good enough that your shop might get a lot of business if they can do it again. I for one would be interested, the price Horton wants regularly is hard to justify.

My question is just how much air is the stock fan and the Horton fan moving? Inquiring minds want to know!

Also, will the Horton fit in there with how much extra space - is it necessary to mod the housing any?

I'm with Illflem on the Horton deal, do they have others at that price?

thepitts, I don't think there has ever been a final answer to your question. I don't think anybody has ever posted about the amount of air (CFM's) of the stock fan. That number would sure make it easy when selecting an aftermarket fan.

No, there is no need to modify the housing (by "housing", I assume you mean the fan shroud).

I don't have any numbers on the CFM's that the Horton moves compared to the stock fan, but I know it's definitely more. The Horton fan has more blades, and when it does kick in, you can feel it (the engine bogging down for a second) and hear it. I'm happy with mine.

I think Powder Extreme probably got his Horton a few years ago before Dodge bought or was givin the exclusive right to sell them. I called Horton in '95 after reading an article in the TDR. I wanted one. The saleman quoted me $450. I almost fainted. If I only had known. #ad

I did buy my Horton about 3 years ago, I'll check and see what the current price is. As far as CFM, it is more. It uses the current fan which bolts on to the new clutch. It locks up solid, the fan turns the same rpm the motor does when engaged. Even with the stock one "engaged" there is still some slippage. The fan is totally free wheel when not engaged and spins at probably only 50 rpm or so, not much air movement. I had it my old 12v that never would hold a constant temp till I put it on. As far as clearance problems there are none, the only mod you need to do to the fan shroud is cut a slot for the bracket and wires, then you mount the bracket to the cross beam over the intercooler. It comes with provisions for a heat sensor, a/c pressure switch, and a manual switch to turn the clutch on. I reallly liked the manual switch, cooled the motor down quick after dyno runs and lowered egt's quick if I turned it on shortly before shutting the truck off. Believe it or not, descending a hill loaded in 5th slighty gaining speed, I turned the fan on and started losing speed! Gives you a pretty good indication of how much power the stock fan robs. I also noticed about . 5mpg increase with it.

I'll let everbody know if the local guy can still get me a good price especially if we can arrange a "group purchase"

The Horton kit that I got approx. 2 months ago came with a new fan. It is heavier construction and one more blade than the stock fan. Maybe the price went up because of the included fan.

Okay, here's the scoop. Dodge sells the Horton as part of original equipment, because of this deal Horton cannot sell that clutch out right. (I think somebody maybe said that?) To get around that Horton designed a new clutch that takes a different fan instead of the factory fan the old style used. The standard price of the clutch from the local guy here is $344. 82, the new fan is $121. 00, the wiring harness (which he said is ridiculous) is $333. 00. He said most guys buy the temp. sensor for $29. 00 and the A/C pressure switch for about $75 depending on model. Total "do it yourself" price would be $569.

He did say he would be interested in arranging a group purchase, probably "somewhere around" 5-10% off.

He also said Horton is pretty low on stock right now, something about a magnet deal with Japan? It would probably be 1 month before he could satisfy any quantities.

Let me know if you guys are interested, I'll call him and set it up then just post his number here.

Do a search; some time ago there was a lot of discussion on the stock fan CFM and if we could replace with aftermarket electric fan. Seems to me the bottom line was could not find one that pulled enough CFM. Love to have a Horton just have other things yet to purchase like E-brake before Horton.

I had the highest CFM fan I could find on my '94, it was a black magic racing fan I think. It worked pretty well, was enough to keep the truck cool while towing and around town. I never tried it loaded in desert heat though. I'm pretty sure it would have been adequate. I (like a dummy) mounted it with the plastic through the radiator style ties, which rubbed a hole in the radiator core after about 20k miles. When I got it fixed they showed me the Horton, had to have it.
