DC is out to get me. Whenever I think I know what I'm doing, they change the part.

Went in to get a fan clutch for my 92 yesterday; not in stock, ordered it.

Went back today and they handed me a fan. We went back thru the computer and found the fan clutch part number superceded by a combination of a fan and a "module" of a different design than the fan + fan clutch.

I told them to order the module and then went to NAPA and bought the fan clutch there. I'll compare the two tomorrow at the dealer and update this.

I'll also give you guys the part number history - I got frustrated and left it at the dealer.

Has anyone been down this road before with the fan and "module"?

I bought a fan clutch from a local NAPA dealer. It looked great, but would not spin the fan when the engine heated up while pulling my fifth wheel. Same performance as the original equipment clutch (worn out) that I replaced. I then went to the local Dodge dealer and bought a clutch. They had one in stock! After replacing the clutch with the MOPAR part, no further cooling problems - sounds like a jet engine warming up under the hood when the temps hit about 200 degrees.

MOPAR part was pricey, but did the job. NAPA part was cheap, but money wasted.

Yep. Fan and clutch supercede to new fan and clutch combination. Got a older clutch from one dealer and put it on. Sounded like a jet engine all the time and vibrated and howled like crazy over 60 MPH. Went back and bought the new balanced fan and put it on. Dropped road speed decibels by 50 percent. Still bellers like a jet engine if you mash the loud pedal but clears up after 35 mph. Compared the two clutches and the new superceded part has a lighter spring on the front of the hub. I am thinking this allows a slower spool up when rpm's come on quickly so it doesn't howl. However, I have some questions on cooling when it really needs to draw a lot of air. The new fan part is balanced on 2 or 3 fins and it must be right cuz it is a lot quieter. spendy little parts though, clutch was $140 and fan $60.

fan module

The Dodge fan module # should be 52028760. The Dodge dealer may be a tad higher in price but its plain hard to beat the OEM.

This part # usually takes in a few years on these trucks also. Hope this helps.

I mean this in a helpful way... ..... Anything that is connected or part of the Cummins engine can be usually bought from Cummins or Cummins authorized dealer much cheaper than a Dodge Dealer. All you have to do is pull the engine serial # from the tag and give it to the part guy so he can look up the specific part for your engine. :)

Thanks, Paychk,

but Cummins doesn't do the fan or fan clutch, according to their shop in Glen Burnie, MD. I asked them first.

I agree with,DBF, I tried Cummins first. No help. Went to

Dodge dealer and found out what it's like to be bent over

and molested. :(

Plus, when I got my p/u back,the grill was cracked. :{

I recently bought a new mopar fan clutch for my 89 from dodgeparts.com for 114. 36 +10% of total s/h. dodge pn 52006096. This was cheaper than my local dealer and napa. It was genuine mopar new in box. I dont have the ac comp hooked up so I havent gotten to hear the fan kick on like a jet engine yet. Its probly kicked on before but with no muffler and loud truck I dont think, I've heard it yet. It free wheels when cold and showed no signs of damage. I need to hook up the ac!!

Serial Number???

I have a 92 with a CPL of 1579 but where do I locate the serial number?

Any help in locating where the number is would be greatly appreciated.

Jim

Look at the engine from the drives side of the truck, at the front you'll see the cover that the injector pump and the vacuum & power steering pump bolt onto. That cover should have the engine data tag riveted to it, pointed toward you. It will list the CPL and the Ser. # plus other engine specific data stamped in it.

Exact same experience as dbarker( first response to post). Mine was replaced August 82 with Mopar #52028760 from local dealer. about $150 . Guess thenew replacement hadn"t come out at that time. Works great and not exceptionally noisy.

Just called my local Dodge dealer and both 52006096 and 52028760 are "good" numbers and the price was $160. So which number is the newest? Are these for different year first gens? The problem I have is the fan seems to kick in too soon and therefore always howls. My thermostat opens just after the third line on the guage but the fan will kick in when the needle reaches the third line.

glhs,

Call 'em back and ask for the part numbers and descriptions for the assemblies that supercede 52028653 (the old fan clutch).

I think you'll find that 52028760 is a "module" (I *know* this is the new "fan clutch"), and another number (possibly your 52006096) is a replacement fan that goes with the "module". I forgot to write down the other part number, so I'll check again also.

The cost to me was $160 for both.

I installed the pair and returned the NAPA clutch after reading some of the messages above.

I got it out on the road today and heated it up some; it was the first time I've heard the fan roar in some time. Guess it was worth it.

On the other hand, I also replaced the thermostat; now I get the engine temp needle alternating between something less than 190 and something just over 210. With the old one, it just came to temp and sat there. Now what?

Glhs, go to www.dodgeparts.com. You can search part numbers online and get prices, same as dealer. 52006096 was the clutch only, no fan. $114. 36. 1-800-731-1022. They are actually a dodge dealer in Seatle, WA I believe.
