Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) fan clutch

my truck has been running really hot lately pulling my trailer. i know the fan clutch is bad since i can't here the fan lock up ( ussually sounds like a plane taking off). anyways i was talking with a buddy of mine and he said why replace the fan clutch when you can have electric fans. so it got me thinkin can you put electric fans on these trucks good idea or bad idea and what are some of the pros and cons??

There was a post awhile back about gunk blocking the radiator fins up. If you haven't moved the CV tube from the current location you might want to look there. A small flash light pointed from the inside of radiator out in the dark will give a quick inspection.

I haven't read of anyone here actually finishing an electric fan install. You would have to take into account the IC and AC system. Pros: Over-ride switch; ability to turn on fan in heavy traffic for better AC performance or anticipation of long hill climb while loaded.



Cons: Mass air flow if fan failure occurs.

You can put two 12" electric fans on the front side of the a/c condensor. I just checked that out for my truck AFTER the purchase of a 16" fan which is too big without modifying the grill bracket.



IF the radiator fins are clean, the electrics work well for additional cooling.



NAPA's online site has the fan clutch listed. Then you can ask for it at the counter. If you go to the counter first, you will be told they don't stock it. A problem there with their database in the stores.
