I got a P0483 code about a week ago, searched it on here and found it to be the fan clutch. So I spun the fan by hand and it spins freely around 8-10 rotations. Ok, clutch is bad. But, while I was searching this, there were many recommendations to first unplug the harness and clean the connectors. Some said to check the wires to make sure they aren't rubbed thru. Problem is, I can't find wires coming from mine anywhere. Are there different styles for an '06? I know my '97 didn't have wires and my dads '99 doesn't either. Am I missing something? I looked up fan clutches online for an '06 and all I can find are ones with the wires. Kinda confused here.

the wire loom comes down one of the fan shroud support arms to the lower part of the engine. The fan is still mechanical but the amount of engagement is controlled electrically.

Um, this is one of those "wow am I stupid" moments!! I was so focused on looking at the back of the fan that I totally overlooked and forgot about the front of the fan. Bingo, there it is. Now that that problem is solved, where does one find a good deal on a new one?

Thanks, Bob.

just this week i was on rockauto.com checking prices and found Hayden fan clutch for 150.00,they also carry Dorman brand for 250,was wondering who maybe has used Hayden brand iknow it is an old name in the fan clutch bussiness.

OE clutch or you will just be doing it again. None of the aftermarket ones seem to work well. Online thru a Mopar parts supplier is about the best deal around.

Thanks guys. So far, the cheapest I've found is $302. Still looking tho. Couple months ago I saw one for $257, but I can't remember where.

Look on line also. and check out your nearest Cummins parts retailer, you will need the engine ser# for them to look it up (if it is a Cummins part)
Don't be in to big of a hurry to replace. clear the codes and see if it comes back. Look over ALL the wires going to the fan hub, there where some problems in the earlier 3rd gens with the wiring. Are you having other problems related to engine heat?

Not supplied by Cummins, they supply everything that it mounts to (fan hub, tensioner, etc.) but not the fan clutch itself.

Mopar item.

Mike.

I discussed changing the fan clutch on my early 2004 a year or so ago. Your part number may be different, but you can search on-line for a Mopar dealer who will give you a good discount. The hub nut threads are right hand, not left hand like the second gen Rams.

Bob, no other heat related problems at all. Only reason I knew anything was going on is every so often I do the key cycle routine to see if the truck throws any codes. The only code is the 0483. Truck isn't running any hotter than normal and all seems good. I'm not in too big of a hurry as it's been cold here, but I'm also one to fix things as soon as they break.

mwilson, thanks, you answered my question before I even got to ask it.

Joe, it'd be great to be able to read your write ups along with all the others in the TDR issues, but I haven't received one for about 6 years.
