Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Fan Clutch ??

I think I am in need of new fan clutch symptoms are pulling a grade w/ 10,000 5er temps went thru ceiling. never did hear fan engage. usually sounds like a jet under hood when it goes on my question is where is best source ??? dealer , napa, cummins ?? thanks for your help AGAIN also as soon as I reached top of grades temp cooled right back down, but not as fast as normal

When I need one called all the parts stores thay all wanted about the same price as the dealer. So I bit the bullet and got it from the dealer.

I bought my fan clutch from Advantage Dodge in Farmington New Mexico...

I believe it was $138 delivered...

WOW! That is sure alot better than what I had to pay for the one I put on the Ford. Well over $200 for that one. Got it from NAPA or Big A, don't remember. That was a couple of years ago.

I just got a Hayden fan clutch. Check around with some auto parts stores. It cost me $79. 99. While yer at its a good time to replace a belt. I got a Dayco for $23. oo

I went to my local dealer and paid around the $110. I wounder why some dealers are priced more than others? Just dosent seem right.

I asked my local parts man (a friend) and he said that they are given a suggested price but are free to increase the price for items as they see fit. Supply and demand.

I got the same thing from O'reilly Auto for 62. 00. It worked fine.

I don't know how long my fan clutch wasn't working It never over heated until I went to Ca. to pick up my 5er. So I had to replace it in a field by a auto parts store.

Did you know that the clutch removal tool for a Ford Ranger works?

Don't FORGET OLE MAN WINTER... ... Your CLUTCH can be BAD in the OTHER direction also,,,

As in staying LOCKED-UP ALL the time,,,,,, an NEVER letting engine come up to temperature.



As Mine was,,that was ONE REASON I froze my BUTT last winter.

I just took my FAN/CLUTCH off. . been running it that way for over a year,.

NEVER ABOUT 195.

is there a way to test the status of the fan clutch. i have had my truck get warm a few times in 85 plus weather sitting in traffic and never heard that fan kick on.

One more thought for you all...

If YOUR HEARING the JET ENGINE ROAR that few of you spoke off.

That too is a sign that your CLUTCH IS SHOT,, what is happening is the CLUTCH is in FULL LOCK UP and (lack of a better term) NOT slipping (i. e. ) as a CLUTCH so when it is WORKING RIGHT it only grabs/slips as needed,,,

Fan Roar = Peace of Mind

When it's 116F outside, and I'm in stop -n- go traffic (or towing up the Black Canyon Grade), the intermittent roar of the fan clutch is soothing to hear. I like to run the air conditioner under those conditions, and I like to keep the coolant temps down.



I ain't no engineer, but from my experience, the OEM fan clutch is supposed to go into full lockup now and then.

fan clutch for 95'

Has anyone purchased a fan clutch for a 94 or 95 from the dealer lately?



I checked three dealers for prices. Two gave me prices for the clutch, while the third told me that I must buy the fan and clutch because they no longer sell the old style clutch, and the new style will not fit my fan.



Napa does sell a "heavy duty" clutch that fits 94 and 95 only. Price is within a few dollars of the dealer. Also checked Cummins, who said it's a DC item.



I'm wondering whether DC made the change because of structural or performance problems with the original fan, or they just don't want to carry two different clutches??



Any input is appreciated.

Replacement fan clutches

I am confused by what the dealers told you. My first thought would be to go to one of the dealers that said they could get just a clutch and order it from them. Before you do so, though, very carefully inspect your fan for cracks. If my experience with other makes is a guide, cracks--if there are any--will be on the leading edges near the hub. Any crack is bad news, and replacing the whole assembly is warranted.



I am wary of aftermarket HD fan clutches. My experience wasn't on a Dodge, but I found about a 50% defect rate out of the box. The cheaper brands were much worse.

I was confused by the dealers also. I called back to the two who would sell the clutch seperately, and when questioned further, agreed that their clutch would only fit the replacement fan, not my original. Two out of three dealers would have sold me the wrong part???





I will carefully inspect the fan and probably replace the whole unit to keep it OEM. The dealer who gave me correct information will get the sale!

I discovered the same thing a couple years ago. I went with the NAPA clutch because it was a lot cheaper thatn replacing all of it and my fan was cherry. Of course, the clutch had been dead for years so the fan never got loaded to produce the cracks.

Just replaced my fan clutch Thursday. I had started the engine up and while cold could see the fan speeding up and slowing down. Also, while driving with the water temp gauge reading a steady 170 could hear the fan kicking in and out at about 30 second intervals. Got a Hayden Severe Duty from www.heathdiesel.com for $89 delivered, One very impotant thing is that the radiator is clean so the hot air passing through to the clutch fan can trigger it to engage to about 90% of pulley speed from the 60% it was turning when not locked in.
