Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) fan noise

I need to know if this is normal.



unpredictably, my fan seems to be on from 1st gear, all the way to 2k rpm in 3rd where it will finally quit the whirring noise. Seems to come on when the engine is not that hot.



I don't remember it doing this when I first got the truck. It is loud and really saps the power.



What is normal operation for this clutch fan?

The fan shouldn't engage until a certain coolant temp is reached. Have you checked the fan clutch when the engine is off? It should somewhat free spin with a little resistance.

It is normal for the fan to come on when it is started for the first time of the day, or if it has been sitting long enough. How does it stay on?

I noticed this morning , when it was stone cold it was on.



It will also be on during complete accelleration of 1. . 2. . 3 gears after a long highway trip, where I have exited and stoped/started.



guess it is normal.
