Thanks for the feedback. We got it done in about 4 hrs with two people. We decided to remove the fan bracket in lieu of going after the fan nut. Not a bad tactic if you have two people, but a lone person would not want to go that route.
The KDP was out about 1/8" and was tapped back in flush. Also, that is one funky "seal starter" or whatever Cummins calls it. We finally figured out that it needed to stay on the seal to get it on the end of the crank, then it pulled out. First time I'd ever seen one. Other than that, the process was very straight forward. Even had time to replace the starter contacts.
