farm fuel

I live on a farm and keep a 500 gallon tank of purple farm diesel for my tractors. In the event that I wanted to use some of this in my truck for off highway farm use would this fuel cause any harm to the truck. Ive heard that its the same other then the purple color for non tax use and Ive also heard it is a different formula with more sulfur???

We also have off highway use deisel on our ranch. The distrubutor said the only difference is the red dye and taxes. other than that, it's the same deisel that they supply to local gas stations.

Everything I've ever heard about it is that it's the exact same just without the taxes... .



BTW, you can get it (farm fuel) in clear too (no dye at all) if you buy it in bulk... like 10,000 gallons at a time. Then even if you are dipped, they couldn't tell anyway.

Your truck should never know the difference or in some cases my run better, i have heard some fuel manufactures still run high sulfur fuel for diesel #3 (farm grade). if this is the case it is actually better on the injection components and will work great in all trucks unless u have a older model that still has a CAT, high sulfur fuel will stop up a CAT in no time...

We buy 8000 gallons at a time and can't buy it without the dye, they even charge us for the dye The driver that delivers to us told me that they add the dye when they load the truck, its all the same fuel.

In our state owned diesels it's legal to burn red fuel so that's all they've ever had, no problem only difference is the dye.

ouch jrobinson... must not have a good supplier or something. I know for a fact that when people around my home buy 10-15000 gallons, they can get it clear for $0. 02 more than the died stuff. That's considered "1 load" or something like that. You have to buy at least that to get the 2 cent deal though. Lots of guys do it, cause then they just throw it in everything and don't worry. I only know of one person that has even been dipped around home, and when they found the red stuff in his pickup, they checked everything at his farm, and sure enough all of it was red... that was a hefty ticket the first time... won't even tell ya how much it cost him the second time they caught him

You should be able to buy regular on road diesel, and save your receipts,and then file a tax form to recieve the road tax back, at the end of the year. That is what some due, here in Indiana. This way your getting ther same tax free benefit of off road fuel , without taking the chance of getting caught. You can due this, with gasoline, that a normal homeowner would burn in your lawn mower, or weedeater. It used to be that Farm Bureau Co-op off road fuel was high sulphur, which they claimed was better for hard working engines (more lubricity) I dont Know if this is true any more or not any more.

Legally red dyed diesel can contain more sulfur but it rarely does, refiners don't want to mess with two products when one will do.



In order to use the tax back option with your own tank you must have a meter on your bulk tank and keep an open to inspection daily updated record of which rig every gallon of fuel went into.
