Originally, I relocated my Cummins pump to the frame and later added an additional 5PSI Carter before it back by the tank and have had dependable fuel for the last 3 years. Getting paranoid about Carter pumps and from TDR info decided to go with a FASS pump. Ordered a DDRP-02 from GENOS. Fast shipping. Mounted it on the frame and plumbed it with #6 and 3/8 lines. Added the recommended prefilter and wired it up. Jogged the starter. Nothing. No noise. Moved the plug back to my original 2 pumps and they ran fine. Got my normal 16 PSI. Put the connector back to the FASS and NOTHING. Put a clamp-on DC ammeter on the lead and its drawing 17 AMPS. But the pump doesn't run. The current drain stops after 2-3 seconds.

Called GENOS this AM and was told I had a 'truck wiring problem'. Sure. So tonight I will pull the pump and wire it directly to the battery using a standard Cummins supplied pigtail and see what happens. So far I am NOT impressed with FASS and somewhat annoyed with the response from GENOS.

Does anyone know what the normal current should be on a FASS DDRP-02? It appears to me at this point that the motor is locked and I feel 17 amps is a lot for a normal running pump. Maybe normal for a locked rotor. Locked rotors are not good.

Any thoughts or guidance would be appreciated as I want to get this right before we leave on a trip.

Call Geno`s back ask for Scott, if he doesn`t answer leave him a message about problem. He has looked after me for a number of years. Geno`s will make it right.
Good Luck CAPTPHIL

Thanks. I will call tomorrow AM and get Scott.

Didn't get a name of the guy I spoke with. But after explaining that the original pump runs but moving the plug over to the DDRP it doesn't run he told me I had a truck wiring problem. BS! That does not sound like the reputation Genos has. Kinda p****d me off. I told him I would remove the pump and connect it directly to the battery. I think it will smoke.

For some reason (I suspect by design) when jogging the starter it draws 17 amps for about 3 seconds and then the truck drops power to it. Sounds like a self protect thing.

DDRP-02 problems

OK. Called Genos and asked to speak with Scott. His help was excellent. Over the day I spoke with him 3 times. Always pleasant and very supportive.

If you are installing the DDRP-02 on the frame (where else?) then there are a few things to understand.

1. The instructions provided by FASS are lousy. They are for engine location install and even then the pictures are pretty useless.

2. This pump according to Scott must be mounted with the "weep hole" pointed down. On the frame this makes for a rather sharp curve for the hoses.

3. It appears to be harder to prime than the old Carter vane pump. This was my basic problem. It would not prime with 3/4 tank of fuel and sitting level. I let it run for several minutes and nothing. Opened the output line and got a good flow. put it back on and nothing. The fix was crack the fuel filter and let the air out. Did not have to do this if using the old Carter. Therefore I find this pump is harder to prime.

4. During the troubleshooting process I measured the current draw with a clamp on DC ammeter. Trying to prime it would draw slighty less than 2 amps.

When the priming was successfull then the pitch would change and it would draw about 3. 3 amps.

5. Overall, I do not have a "warm fuzzy" feeling about this pump. I am leaving my two series plumbed Carters on the frame with a setup that allows switching on the side of the road in about 10 minutes.

6. While Genos seems willing to support us the return procedure is less that user accommodating. Call Genos. They send a loaner if they have one in stock. Send them your pump. They send to FASS. FASS makes decision to repairm replace or blow you off. They return to Genos who sends it to you.

7. While working with this pump I find it to be well built but part of me says wrong pump for the job. We can change a fuel filter, bump the starter about 3 times and off and running with even the original Carter pump on the engine.

With this pump it now means leave the filter cracked until all the air (and some of the fuel has leaked all over) is purged.

8. I plan to watch the gauge like a hawk until Iget feeling more comfortable with this 'fix'.

9. I would think twice before buying a DDRP-02.

I recently did the same thing and I too thought the DDR was not running. After a call to Geno's and some checking, I found the pump was running. It is very quiet.
