We have 2 large filters on all our trucks... a 10 micron primary and a 2 micron secondary... something we designed and installed... the filters are 3 1/2 or so in diameter and about 12 inches tall... we service them once a year... regardless of mileage and have yet to have a problem... . some of our trucks see 50K a year.....
On 04 and up trucks, there is a 20 second pump run circuit built into the computer... when the key goes to run, but not cranking for the glow plug cycle the pump will run for 20 seconds... this is bring the system up to pressure and if the engine is hot, push hot fuel back to the tank and thus remove any air bubbles that might form from peculation of the fuel... . Its very easy to leave the secondary filter (in our case) loose, and fill both filters.
This 20 second cycle also serves as a test for the lift pumps with the stock filter cover removed... .
BTW we use the above mentioned filters on all our diesels, 5. 9, 6. 7, + CAT's.
