I have a new fuel filter and fuel/water seperator on the way from Geno's. This will be the first filter change since I've had my FASS 150 system. Is it necessary to fill the new filters with fuel before putting them on? Or can you just put them on there? Will it create any air pockets in the fuel lines? Any advice on tips or tricks would be appreciated. TIA.

I had mine not prime before when I changed both filters.

If you have issues with not priming, loosen the second filter (the particulate filter), bump the starter, and once the pump catches prime (you will hear it change pitch), quickly spin the filter tight.

*Most* of it is returned to the tank... a small portion does get to the engine.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, which has been a lot lately. But I believe they fill from outside in, so if you wanted to ensure all the fuel was filtered you would want to fill the filter using the outside ring of holes and not the center hole.

Here's one for you guys. I have the FASS 95/95. I used to change the OEM filter every 15K. What are you guys changing your FASS filters at now???

We have 2 large filters on all our trucks... a 10 micron primary and a 2 micron secondary... something we designed and installed... the filters are 3 1/2 or so in diameter and about 12 inches tall... we service them once a year... regardless of mileage and have yet to have a problem... . some of our trucks see 50K a year.....

On 04 and up trucks, there is a 20 second pump run circuit built into the computer... when the key goes to run, but not cranking for the glow plug cycle the pump will run for 20 seconds... this is bring the system up to pressure and if the engine is hot, push hot fuel back to the tank and thus remove any air bubbles that might form from peculation of the fuel... . Its very easy to leave the secondary filter (in our case) loose, and fill both filters.

This 20 second cycle also serves as a test for the lift pumps with the stock filter cover removed... .

BTW we use the above mentioned filters on all our diesels, 5. 9, 6. 7, + CAT's.

Just for update purposes, my change went flawless. I filled both filters before I put them on. Filled the outside ring and not in the middle. Bumped the starter for about 20 seconds and it fired right up. No problems.

Dave Hess, thanks for asking that question. I was wondering the same. I think I am going to change yearly. I don't think it will hurt to be a little over zealous.

MMcCowan: My feelings exactly! I was actually going to continue to change the filters at the same rate as the OEM (15K). I thought the "flaming" would be a little rough on me if I did ;) . I only put about 7500 miles a year on mine so I am considering every three years or 22,500 miles. It's a comfort level thing with me. I still change my oil every 3,750 miles even though the oil samples have been coming back with TBN between 10 and 12.

Does anyone drain the water on the FASS? I have tried and can never get the drain to seal right again. Never any water in it anyway. I fill mine when I change them; so much easier on the batteries and starter.
