Hello to all you knowledgeble folks!



I am having problems with my 2001 Ram. I beleive I am losing my transfer (lift )pump or have already lost it. Every once in a while the truck acts like it has a miss and then it would clear up and operate normally. Just as I got to work today, it lost power but did not cut off. The truck will start and idle normally. In hope that I haven't fried my injection pump, I had the truck towed home. I have read on TDR about a FASS lift pump. Can someone please tell me where to purchase one and the cost? I currently do not have any fuel pressure gauge but will have one soon. Truck has about 147K miles on it. Thanks to all who reply!

The FASS from Diesel Performance Products is advertised in each TDR (Issue 55, p. 77; 1-866-powerhp; www.dieselpp.com). It is a high quality system with large capacity filters and a high capacity pump. If you decide not to buy another stock-type pump, it is a fine selection. Whatever system you use, be sure to invest in a fuel pressure gauge. You didn't say whether the “miss” was under high power, where a worn stock lift pump would not be producing enough fuel delivery to the VP44 injection pump. The VP44 itself could be failing, also. A bad lift pump can and will take out the VP44 sooner or later.

You definately should get a fuel pressure gauge on that rig too. Call 304-864-3399 Doug @ Advance Diesel Technology & tell him that Jamie said to call. With no fuel psi or very low the truck will start and run but will miss above 2,000 rpms. The FASS also has a 6 warranty Oo.

AirDog lift pump is what I have. Nary a problem with over 140,000 miles on it.

Also check to make sure that your fuel filter isn't absolutely clogged to the point to where it's restricting flow. If that doesn't fix them problem then I would highly recommend a FASS system for your rig. If I can answer any questions let me know.

You can't go wrong with either a FASS System or just the FASS Pump. I have sold several of these systems and I haven't had any bad feedback.

Upon 2nd reading of your post I believe your APPS or TPS (two names for the same part) may be the culprit. Find a known good TPS on a friends truck (meaning it doesn't exhibit the same syptom on his truck) and temporarily install it on your truck. If the miss disappears you have found the probable cause. If you do this swap just remove the TPS in its mount and swap the entire thing, no need for extra work (and then re-calibration). If you find your TPS is bad install a new one and calibrate it by following instructions on this thread https://www.turbodieselregister.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1705567#post1705567

Just did this on a buddy's truck and he discovered his TPS was bad when he thought it was the VP44. Better to correctly diagnose than guess. It's not a bad idea to install an aftermarket lift pump but it may not remedy the situation without chasing down the cause.
