FASS Cold Weather performance ??s

High Efficiency Oil Filters - Bypass Filters

Truck is in shop for a New VP after losing 2 LPs in 6 months. I have just done about 3 hours of reading on the FASS and other aftermarket systems.

My original concern about cold weather problems are pretty much gone, however I have new concerns. I realize that there is no completely failsafe system that will run with out problems forever.

Some of the things I have been reading are in regards to the brushes on the motors getting water in them and causing problems. Any idea if this has been resolved on the FASS' that are coming off the line now?

Also does the FASS come with everything u need to install it ie; fittings, wiring and electrical, hoses, mounting brackets, good idiot proof instructions?

ALso I have a short bed QC 4x4 and seems like there are few mounting options. I am concerned about the filters hanging low and getting wacked by something kicked up off the road.

One last thing (for now) I have read some posts regarding the fuel pick up not being adequate to flow for the FASS. What are people doing to remedy this. Read one post today about lifting the bed and drilling holes in the fuel pickup module float basket. I was thinking about installing a stand pipe type PU, but am leaning away after some posts. ANy ideas?

I'm tired of changing lift pumps ( 4 total in 45K) although I can change them like a NASCAR pit crew changes tires. 20min from start of change to truck running on the last one! Still swore alot though! I hate that a BS lift pump is the weak link.

Please help a brother out with some info on this one.

ps I'm hoping to get a "kit" that includes everything needed, if u know where to get one let me know.

Thanks

J-

BTW does FASS have an actual website with info, all I can find are sites for retailers on the web. I'm looking more for tech data and specs etc.

http://www.dieselpp.com/ is the website. I have never had any trouble with the brushes on mine after almost a year of service. Mine is a little noisey, I hear that a larger pickup will quiet that down so I may tackle that this spring. They make a mounting bracket for 3rd gen's that keep the filters above the bottom of the bed. They didn't have it when i mounted mine so i had to fab something up.

Thanks bpenrod,

I was able to find their site after some more searching, I though they had one.

Have you had any geling/waxing problems ( if it gets cold where u r at)? Any other problems or concerns that you have had, or is FASS working up to your standard?

Thanks

J-

keep em coming guys! thanks

I live in MI and we had a few cold spells, 6 below without the wind chill, never had any gelling problems at the FASS. I plumbed it through the stock canister to keep the heater up by the engine.

Check out the BD auxiliary lift pump on the internet. They have a kit that works great for my 2001 diesel. You don't have to give up the use of the stock pump. Just perform regular filter changes.

Hey Bpenrod,

When u ran to the stock filter canister, are u running a stock fuel filter too, or just the canister/heater? I though that the stock canister had a "valve" in the bottom that lifts up ( closes) when there is not a filter in the canister to keep dirty fuel in the canister?

Thanks

ps where is Riley Center at, I'm in Ypsilanti.

I've had a FASS on my truck since they came out with it, and I have had zero problems. The truck has sat for days outside in below zero weather... fired right up. I am on and off job sites constantly and have never had an issue of anything damaging a filter or water seperator. I just installed one on my cousins CTD (2000 SB QC 4 x 4)and all instructions, brackets, lines, etc. were included. Was very easy to do. I think he purchased his from Piers (?). Overall a great product and peace of mind.

I am pretty sure this is the way I'm gonna go. I would like to replace the included barb hose connectors with swivel type connectors ( the ones that are basically two pieces, one on the pump and one on the hose) What are the sizes of the fitting that I would need for the pump and the VP. ALso does the kit come with a FP port to hook my FP Gauge into up by the VP?

Thanks

J-

JC, The Fass comes with everything you need. I wouldn't bother trying to run it in to your stock filter canister but instead I would just run it into the back of your VP. Also it does come with a pressure port but it is clear back on the pump, so if you didn't want to run your fuel pressure line to the pump you would have to get a T fitting to splice into the line.

If your interested give me a call or pm me.

I have had the original lift pump failures (2), installed the carter push pumps (2), finally installed the FASS. Had fuel starvation problems due to the high flow rate of the FASS, replaced the tank fuel pickup module with a home built one and installed a different type of gauge sender. Removed the original fuel filter set up. Rewired the FASS power supply to get the inline fuse up in the engine compartment where it should be. sealed the brush caps to keep the water out. Got the FASS fuel return into the top of the tank instead of into the tank vent line. Learned that the only sane way to access the top of the fuel tank is to raise the bed. If I were to do it again and I didn't have the remote mounted oil filter on the front of the engine I would look closely at the RASP system.
