Okie-Go

Changed fluid in 6spd. yesterday and installed the fast coolers. Real easy to put on and super fit. It took longer to clean the gasket stuff from the cover than it did to put them back on with the coolers installed.
 
I got a set at Tulare. They are made from extruded aluminum and are extremely strong, in addition to being functional. Since they are finned aluminum, they should help cool the lube. Using two of them adds about 2 quarts of lube capacity to the trans. That is an extra 50% in the NV4500!



At Tulare, Verlyn had one side of his dually sitting on a pair of coolers, one under the front tire and one under a rear tire. They were on their side, the weakest direction for supporting weight, and showed no sign of fatigue.
 
I did a litttle "unscientific" testing on a 4,700 mile trip pulling the travel-trailer in September. I crawled under the truck on a few occasions and felt different components like the rear-axle, wheels, transfer-case, etc. , and discovered that the transmission was the hottest (to the touch) component on the whole truck. I think that a set of Fastcoolers are definately on the list of items to add to the truck. :) I would like to actually test the temperatures with a accurate instrument, but by touch, the transmission seemed significantly hotter than even the rear axle.
 
I got back from a 200 mile trip totally empty. The cooler was hot to the touch but I am sure the oil would be much hotter than if I did not have the extra capacity. I like em a bunch.
 
I did some before and after temp tests and found my transmission temps dropped a full 40 degrees under a hard pull after installing the fastcoolers. I like em:D

I didn't think about it but yes I do go fast. The faster I go the more the air can cool the oil. Ya know they don't call them fast coolers for nothin.
 
Thanks Piers for the temp test. 40 degrees, thats awesome. I'm sure it really takes a bit longer for 6 quarts to heat up rather than four quarts. What should we expect when adding two quarts to a four quart capacity transmission.



Lubegard and other companys quote a 10 degree drop in heat doubles the life of the oil, and a 20 degree drop in heat doubles the life of the transmission. Also nine out of ten failures are heat related.



Blumenthals, a large transmission rebuilder in Oklahoma City quotes that 50 percent of the manuals they rebuild have been burnt. Either by using the wrong oil, the lack of oil, or just exhausted oil.



By reducing the average operating temps, peak temps. you will extend the life of the transmission ever further.

I have mine, just waiting for some lube

I have mine sitting here, just have to buy some lube:) .

I have always thought that the MagHytec rear-end covers were a good idea(still do), but after my "seat-of-the-pants"testing(see post above), I'm starting to think it is just as important,if not more, to try to cool the transmission. I always thought that once the transmission was in high gear, there wouldn't be that much heat generated. Crawling underneath the truck and feeling the transmission(after a long trip pulling) proved me wrong. I was suprised to find it quite a bit hotter than the rearend. The installation looks simple and I like the idea of having the added capacity. :) :).
 
I have spoken with alot af transmission rebuilders lately and have found that alot of them add an extra quart of lube past the fill level. I have always thought this was ok to do but now I'm sure.



My NV 5600 has about 6 1/2 to 7 quarts in it, and I'm not concerned about temps. in overdrive.
