Is it normal to sound like that?

All of these recent mods, whats wrong with me?????? (Impossible question:) )

I bought these at Scheids event, and finally got a little highway time to warm the transmission up so I could change the oil and put these on.

Ya know it must just be me, 'cause I never hear anyone else have as much trouble doing a simple bolt-on job like this. Here's my story,

They don't fit!!! Two of the bolts that hold the Getrag to the bellhousing are in the way!!!:-{} I really hate to take the grinder to something brand-freakin' new, but what else to do? It wasn't that bad, but I had to grind down a couple of the fins about an inch , just enough to fit around the bolt head. Not as bad as it sounds.

I thought that now in addition to my added lube I would do the one quart overfill also. Now that I read Old Smoky's post I can't believe that I didn't think of using the dipstick hole to overfill as Fast 1 suggested. So what did I do, the shifter method. No problem, but let me ask ya'll one question, How the #@$%! do you get the snap-ring back into place. I fought with it for about 1/2 an hour, until I got smart and stuck a screwdriver in one of the gear shifter holes, and used some c-clamps to hold it down. (Does that make any sense to those of you that have fought with that?) I finally got it back together, and after about 1 1/2 gallons of Amsoil, I'm noticing that my 2nd to 3rd shifts are a little smoother. I usually get a little clash, but I thought that I just wasn't giving the syncro's enough time.

They do look good under there, and I feel good knowing that I've got plenty of lube in the old Getrag, now I kinda wish that I would of bought the clear covers. I put the ugly ones back on that were already there. Hey JFitzgerald, how about you giving me that set you bought so that at least one of us could have the right set-up :-laf

I thought I was the only one who had to fight with every project...

Well, I guess you can always add the windows later. :D Were they out of 'em, or did you just not buy 'em? Hope I didn't take the last window. Since I got a window only, I didn't have a fit problem, but I understand what you're saying. Sucks to have to grind on shiny new parts. :( But, that's fairly typical for aftermarket parts.

Snap ring - I did a little #@$%! to get mine installed too. Kinda had to "wind" it back into the hole (needlenose & small screwdriver), while holding pressure on the shifter knob with my chest to hold the spring down, then pushed the ring down into its' groove with a small screwdriver. Err, something like that. ;) Gotta stick out the tongue just right too. :p

With some snap ring pliers big enough for that ring, it would be much easier. Mine aren't big enough.

So, all in all, how do you like all those new parts on your rig?

Never have taken a shift lever out to fill mine. I am fortunate(?) to have a very steep hill to park sideways.

I put a FAST cooler on the left side of my transmission almost a year ago. At the time, I asked him (Verlyn I think) if it would work on a Getrag. He said he was sure it would fit bolt pattern wise but wasn't sure about it clearing the bell housing to transmission bolts. He said I could try it and send it back if didn't work. I looked at my transmission and determined it would fit with a little grinding, so I asked him to send one. Needless to say it worked.

My transmission temp gauge has yet to register the min. 140*since the install.

Overfilling the transmission definitely seems to help. I've had no problems and the Getrag seems to get quieter with more miles.

How do I like the new mods?,:D Love 'em

No JFitzgerald, I'm just a cheapskate, I didn't feel like spending another $20:rolleyes: Reading about how you fought with that snap-ring almost got me fired up again!!

Next mod, a gauge to put in the Fast Coolers of course. , oh, I almost forgot, I need a gauge in the Mag-Hytec diff cover too:rolleyes: I'm thinkin' 'bout an A-piller mount...

Maybe I'll try that way next time. I could drive one side of the truck up onto my trailer, or find the right ditch...

Glad you like those mods, Dieselman359, and thanks for letting us know how the installs went so we know what we'll be getting into if we do the same.

Just don't leave it parked on a slope for too long. If you have a marginal rear wheel seal, it may leak oil.
