Here's a thought.

The post listing displays are vertical intensive now which really spreads the page vertically as opposed to before. Possibly change cell widths or Forum discription lengths so they don't wrap and "thicken" the entry?

Looks like the post title cell could be much narrower and might stop the wrap ant the end.

I've widened the column that the forum name was in on search results and also made the font size smaller for it. It's more condense now - good suggestion.

Just in case anyone else wants to know, I did find that once I have used view unread posts, using view last days posts does about the same thing ie display the new posts at the top. FWIW

Much better now.

I just noticed the forum colors are Dodge paint options. . nice touch

Is there a prize for that? :D

I haven't noticed any speed difference between the old setup and the new.

I don't like the color.

Moving around right now is a pain in the butt. I didn't use all the old features. Now I have new ones to ignore.

I don't like the auto drop down lists feature.

The user controll panel button needs moved to something besides discussion forum. I had a hell of a time finding it when I got an email saying I had a PM.

As I use the forum from multiple computers at multiple sites, I would prefer to have the default "remember me" box unchecked. As a general rule I don't like to leave username and password information spread all over shared computers.

I stopped the search rebuild temporarily tonight to see what the server load and response times will be like at peak times when the search isn't being rebuilt and it's doing great. I'll be starting it back up in about an hour.

There are 11 different color options - you don't like any of them?

If you come to the forums and have a PM you should get a popup window that will take you straight there. If not there will be a flashing red banner near the top that will also take you right there. You can also click on "private messages" at the upper right. There are several ways to get there.

Steve

The vast majority of people will want it to remember them and we'll have to answer a LOT more support questions if people aren't automatically logged in. Robin has been working all day resetting passwords for people because they didn't remember it. We have to plan for what the majority wants/needs on things like this.

Steve St. L. posted, rrausch - what's happening when you try to open a post in a new window? There shouldn't be any reason that wouldn't work - it's just an html link like any other.

Steve, nothing happens at all. All the other sites I go to, I position the pointer on the html link and click and hold down, and in about 1 second a little menu pops up, and one of the options on that menu is "Open link in new window". But with this new version, so far I click and absolutely nothing happens. No menu pops up. I'm still trying. But it still works on all the other sites I visited today.

It's working well for me. I do miss the "unread PM's" link on the homepage though.

I put the unread PM link on the front page again. The hack I used for the new login box didn't have it. I had to redo all of the forum login tie-ins on the other parts of the site because vB3 deals with passwords differently than vB2 did.

I can't really argue "many people foget their passwords and this caused us a support headache therefore, our default will be to ecourage people to forget their passwords. " :) I'll make a last point out that this is counter to the standard Windoze paradigm of "Do you want Windows to remember this password?" and drop this thread.

You guys do a great job and provide a valuable resource. I'll continue to use the forum, just with a greater agitation level.

I really like the enhanced options available now. :) And 've found my color- flame red. :D

The one thing I really am not liking right now is how much each post is spread out from the next one. Can't remember exactly from just the other day on the old site, but I could view MANY more posts on one screen at a time than I can now. It appears as though the frames around the post user data is making each post quite tall and then there is the extra line after each post for the report, reply/quote, quick reply. Even an only 11 word (1 line) post takes up 1/3 of my screen real estate. My screen resolution is 1280x1024.

Maybe I need to get used to a different display mode. I guess I just like reading all the posts chronologically instead of the threaded mode option.

I like the new look. It just took me a minute to figure out how to get around. I like the color choices too.

Too Slow

Do not like the new software as it is much slower than before. I'm running a Mac Powerbook G4 on modem, no high speed internet and everything is 1/2 as fast as before which was even somewhat slow.

Will watch the forums to see if can speed things up but now it's toooo slow for me.

I made a few changes tonight which should help. I closed up the space on the thread list by 3 pixels all the way around (it's 7 now - was 10). I tried 5 pixels but it was too tight IMO. I also changed the way the user info is displayed on the left side of the thread display to make it take up less space which will affect posts with fewer lines. Lastly I wrote some javascript code which allows you to collapse the user info if you don't want to see it which will tighten things up even further. This is the first time I've written any javascript code so if you have any problems with it let me know - I surely could have screwed it up ;) .

That's tightened things together very nicely. Much better IMO. I like the user info in one box like now and the javascript code that collapses the user details box. Nice touch there. I initially expected the collapse to work on each box individually, but it is far easier the way you have it where all of them collapse at once. Thanks much for all of your work on the site.

Steve,

Apparently you lost something as far as Google searches go. The Google search index finds specific threads... from the old setup, and ends up simply taking you to the front page of the new setup.

In time that will resolve itself but I don't think for quite some time.

This is one result I got...

www.turbodieselregister.com/ forums/archive/topic/11699.html

On edit... . posting the previous URL, it only automatically created the link up to the first forward slash

Yep, it'll take them a little while to catch up but they'll get there eventually. The archive is different in this version. In vB2 the archive was a hack that I had installed in order to get the pages on the search engine. In vB3 it's a built in feature but the addresses are different. It'll probably take a few months for them to catch up.

EDIT: I just found a vB3 hack that allows backwards compatibility with the vB2 archive hack so that existing search engine entries will continue to work. I'm installing it now.

EDIT: Installed and working - good catch.

It looks like you must have had a space between the / and forums when you entered that url because I just made a test post and copied and pasted your text (minus the url tags and the space) and it parsed it fine. Here it is: www.turbodieselregister.com/forums/archive/topic/11699.html

It could be one of two things. Try setting the TDR as a trusted site in your browser. In IE pull down the tools menu to internet options, click on trusted sites, then sites. Uncheck the "require https" box and add www.turbodieselregister.com to the list, then recheck the "require https" box. Then apply those changes and try it. If that doesn't work you may have some corrupted cookie files - clear your cookies, reset your PC, and then come to the site and login. Let me know if either of those work for you please.
