Just wondering if anyone has attempted to use a SCBA bottle to feed an air horn setup?

At 2000+lbs of pressure, using a regulator of course, it should allow the use of the system for quite a while before refills.

(Unless you drive like I do;) )

I have several buddies who are fire fighters who have access to a cascade-type bottle-filler.

Howzeabout it? PROs... . CONs?

Air Supply

No problem with your idea, it will work like a champ! I've used the same system in years past. You will need a regulator either fixed or adjustable at 100/125 psig, and a sturdy bracket to secure the bottle. A loose bottle w/2016 psi is like a rocket, and will take out anything it hits!

When the compressor that came with my Grover air horns gave up the ghost, I bought a 7 gallon air tank from WalMart for $17. Re-routed the hose and solenoid to it. It had 65 psi in it 3 weeks ago, and after 7 big blasts(yeah, I'm hot-headed, can't you tell? :D ) it still has 56 psi left in there. Lower pressure, a lot safer than a SCBA bottle. Mine's resting in the bed, up against the cab wall. No holes to drill, I ran the lines through the tie-down bracket on the bed floor. There's room to mount one to the inside frame rail behind the transfer case, if you prefer. Lot of people seem to be mounting propane tanks in that location, with skid plates underneath.

Air Tank

Brian,

I've used the same type tank that you describe ( not for air horns) and have safley put 200psi into it. Used a commercial compressor to do it. Not many smaller type compressors will give you 200 psi.

This web site has a good selection of tanks, valves, etc.

Shovelhead,

I use a SCUBA pony bottle for my air supply. Since I carry dive

bottles all the time (I'm divemaster for our county search and rescue team) it's no problem. I just made a bracket to mount the bottle upright in the bed between the wheel well and the tailgate.

For a regulator, go to your local dive shop and see if they have a

"bargain table" and pick up a used regulator. I've never paid over $25. 00 for one and they also flow enough air to run air tools.

A 30 cu. ft. pony bottle @ 3000psi lasts me over 4 months.

Have fun and good BLASTIN'

Send a PM to Bumble ... he has one on his . . excellent set-up ... I have a picture of it somewhere and will try to locate it for you ...

Bob,

After your post I looked around the web and found a manufacturer/distributor of train air horns. Take a look at this site http://www.trainhorns.com.

I hope one of the members will try these out. Given their size, I would be interested to see how one would mount them. I'd love to get a set!
