Fell asleep... need advice.

Well i was driving since 5 AM this morning, and right around 10 AM I fell asleep while driving down a lonely NM highway. I drove into the median, woke up, steered out of the ditch, overcorrected, and slid sideways down the highway at 55 MPH until the truck rolled over sideways and came to rest on the roof.



I have a lot of money in the truck and was about to install twins. It looks like this will have to wait for a little bit. My truck looks like a wadded up tin can. I am amazed that I only got one scratch.



First: Insurance adjusters will give me money for my brand new DD clutch? FASS? Toolbox? 315's? Gauges? I have receipts for everything. How do I approach this?



Second: I had 46,000 on the ticker of my dodge When I compacted it. What will I expect to see in a check from the insurance?



third: Should I be watching for a used 600? Try and pick up a 610 brand new? Am I going to get a more reasonable deal new or slightly used? I am assuming that I may have to put some more money down, but I'm hoping not too much.



Fourth: I am switching from the NV5600 to anm auto and having DTT do a right off the lot rebuild. How much of a problem is that going to be to find? I really want the extra quickness.

Is it totaled? Sounds like you are expecting it to be. If it isn't, they are just going to pay the body shop to fix it. If they total it (doubtfull) you should get a check for low bluebook for the truck, but it also depends on the insurance company. I have heard of people getting fair market value for their wrecked truck! IMO, if it was a simple roll onto the roof and slide, I don't know if they will total it. To total it the price of the repairs has to be near or above the price they have to pay you to total it out. My guess would be in the area of, say, $35K?

My buddy totaled out a 04. 5 4wd dually and it took the insurance company about 2 weeks to decide what to do. They were deciding what was in their best interest. After a while they did total it out. BTW, he t-boned a bmw that pulled out in front of him when he was doing 50mph towing a tandem dual gooseneck flatbed trailer with about 12k lbs of drill rig and drill bits. After rearanging the pass. side of her car (she was drunk, btw) the collision deflected him into the ditch and jack knifed his trailer. And that bad of an accident they had to think about. Just some food for thought.

My whole roof is collapsed. no glass left. Not a single straight panel on the truck... toolbox was even raped (solid Weatherguard). Seats broken at the headrest. Bed torn where toolbox ripped off the bedrails. Front bumper bent where it dug in on the way up and onto its side. Doors destroyed. Dash broke. Two flat 315's and a pair of BENT rims... actually doubled over and bent it the lower 1/3.



I am more than lucky to be alive... I really don't think they will be able to not toal this truck.

I'm guessing that your ins. will only cover your extra goodies if you added them specifically to the policy.

Wow i guess seams how knowbody else is going to say it, i'm glad to hear you're alright. I've fell asleep many times (when i shouldn't have been driving) and luckily nothing happend from it at all.



Just glad you're doing good. Truck is replaceable, you're not.

I work 80+ hours a week... I drive 300 miles a day. Hell yeah I am going to be tired on Friday morning. I was talking to my buddy about taking a nap when I got where I was going... I got 4 miles shy of the destination when I rolled the truck. No one was around.



Yeah I should have stopped. But, when I get a job that lets me be a lazy nap taking old fart I'll get the rest I need.

Actually studies show driving tired is worse than driving drunk. I'm glad to hear your ok, I have also fallen asleep in my younger days pushing myself. It will really depend on your insurance company what you get back, I had a car stolen about 6 years ago now, the agent was excellent, they didnt give me low book, the gave me the "cost to replace" value for the area I lived in which was actually better than high book value. He also gave me money for cd's, new tires since I had just replaced them and had the receipt and a few other things I wouldnt even have thought of. However all insurance companies are not the same so for your sake, I hope you have a good and friendly one.

Do you people even have jobs? Everyone in the oilfield works the hours I do. If you are so concerned with the price of oil then insist on reasonable hours for oilfield employees... that will lower the price at the pump.



Seriously guys. I would have much rather been asleep, but I was pushing it to fullfill my responsibilities.

Doug, glad you're OK, and I'll let the comments above stand. However a bit of advise, You never, never, never go to sleep causing a accident. I'm not suggesting any untruthfulness, but a deer/elk/dog/rabbit/BigFoot creature ran in front of me sir and I lost controll avoiding him/it.



Insurance companys take a very dim view of the insured when they admit to dozing off and causing a accident.

I found that out the hard way today. I was cited for "Careless Driving" by NM State Police. The guy was nice and told me he would recommend Deffered for the offense, but that it was necessary. My boss was amazed I had never heard the downsides of admitting you were dozing off.



I hope they work with me. I was honestly not trying to be negligent. I couldn't argue with the "careless driving" citation. But at the time I wasn't thinking of much more thasn trying to get to my site and get some blood flowing... 200 miles as soon as you get out of bed has a way of lulling you into lala land.

BTW, I've done the 24 hour shifts, my girlfriend does 16 hours sometimes as a nurse. We both have admittdly stopped in a roadside rest or park-n-ride area for a nap when you start seeing things and get the forehead on the steering wheel syndrome.



Do the responsible thing, it aint about who works the hardest.

Yes you were. You had obviously gone through the seeing things on the road, rolling the windows down, turning the radio up, shifting body weight around ... ... ..... the only thing you didn't do was pull over and take a dusty ole nap

After I finally realized that I was going to kill myself and maybe others, I started pulling over, and just shutting my eyes for 5-15 minutes, it worked wonders.



One particular bad time, on a long trip, I pulled the old 89 and trailer onto the on ramp amongst a crapload of semis at about 3:00 am. At 9:00 I woke up as the loan vehicle!! Never heard them leave!



I have driven 2 hours to work before, and it almost killed me, I don't even want to think of more.



But yes, real jobs take hours of work and hours of driving, we can't all be bean counters, 9-5!!

thanks man. I have taken many roadside naps... I really didn't feel that bad today. I only nodded once and stretched and took a dip... figured I was good for 5 more miles.

I think my years of driving drunk helped condition me for driving drousy.



Watched a semi go from right lane, cut a car off, and hit barrier on left lane, before he pulled over. I asked him wtf?? He had NO IDEA what he had hit, he was out of it.

I didn't realize the wreck was that bad. I'm glad you are able to be at home and tell us about it. From your description, you got purdy dang lucky! I fell asleep once, recently. Was puling 84 hours a week and commuting about 175 miles a day, along with all the other people in the San Fransico area. I woke up when he truck jolted and found my drivers side off the highway and the rest following . . . . striaght towards an overpass colum. Yeah, little scary. After that I took a day off. After pullin 84 hours a week for like 8 weeks, I was due for a day off at home with the girlfriend
