Helpful hint;

Make the holes a little bigger on the bottom and the frost won't push the post up. If it's bigger on top it acts like a wedge. I've seen a lot of posts and poles pushed out like this up here.

p. s. Good luck with your bruises and blisters!

Concrete and rock... make sure you have your post exactly where you want them 'cause it sounds like they're not going anywhere!

The only good thing about all the rocks we hit is that by default most of the holes are MUCH larger at the bottom than the top. Most of the rocks we hit were between 1' and 3' depth, and by digging them out the hole naturally gets wider down there.

By the 4-hour mark I was wishing for dynamite. At the end of the day I noticed for $30 more I could have ordered a "tow-behind" hydraulic auger. I don't know how much easier such a machine would have been, given all the rocks.

I had to install a park bench that had three legs. I started with a Bobcat with an auger. Didn't make a dent. Ended using a demo hammer drill. It took about a day to dig three stinking, filthy, @$*)!___!?" holes! #@$%! Gosh, hole digging is fun!

We were laughing that some day our kids would be in awe that we actually dug holes "manually" with machines rather than using giant lasers. :-laf

Time to set the pickets. Is there a "standard" or "usual" picket spacing? Seems like my neighbors all used 3".
