OK, Give me flak for such a funky thread here - but, like it says "Other Topics"...

So, I've had this small fern on the north side of the house for ten+ years. The thing is never huge, never dies either. Maybe you don't know, but winters here in Minnesota are typically on the cold side. The other day, it was warm, maybe 40* for a few days. The 3' snow drift against the side of the house melted near where the sump pump drain is. Low and behold, the fern is peeking out and looks like it has been green under there all winter long.

So, do fern plants stay green all winter long, even if they are covered with lots of snow?

I remember in Vermont (40 miles from the Canadian Border) we had a field of ferns on the south facing slope of our yard bordering the woods. The snow drifts there would routinely be at least the 20 FOOT mark as the wind came down the field and snow would naturally accumulate there. I made a snow fort there and one year I got to the earth level and the ferns (all be it frozen) the heads still tasted great! (Fiddler ferns)
