I think my feul filter head is cracked, will have to verify tomorrow. Is the head even available on its own ('98 year)? Just wondrin' how many coins I'm gona have to drop for that, but does anyone know of a filter from another application (ag/ industrial?) that bolts on and would hopefully have a spin on cartridge?

just did this to my truck. mine was leaking around the wires for the fuel heater. got rid of the thing all together. picked up a filter housing and filter from napa for about 50 bucks and mounted it about 2 inches away from my relocated lift pump on the frame. One thing to consider in what i did is that i no longer have the fuel heater or water in fuel warning. Im also running the vulcan big line kit. just something else to keep in mind.

IIRC, from Cummins about three years ago: $175 for the head.

I cracked the one in my dad's truck putting the fuel pressure gauge in... split the fitting in two... I JB welded the plug and pieces back together for the time being... that was three years ago and still holding.

I just recently picked a used on up from eBay for something like $15... might keep an eye out there too.

If you go aftermarket filter, just make sure you get a filter equal to or better than the OEM filter. Fleetguard makes filters and filter heads, as does Wix and Napa.

Well, its definately cracked. right on the plug boss for the "clean" side port. I had already thrown the JB weld in the truck (work) to stay warm today. Cummins here wanted 160- somthing for the filter assy.

I hit ebay last night brfore posting here, I guess I'll keep an eye out in the classifides and ebay. I think my JB fix- with a small hose clamp around the plug boss-- will at least slow the leak down, hopefully it holds completely. That stuff has got me out of a pinch before. As far as using a different filter, what sort of micron/ resistance to flow is the stock filter? Dont wanna make it too hard to push fuel thrugh for the poor ol' LP.

Oh, Hendricks, Im waiting on the vulcan big line reloc. kit, and the "new" cummins LP (see "$70 lift pump") is sitting on the floor of the work truck. Im in the process of improving my fuel supply woes and now this... .

... . the "want" for a better part just turned into a "need" :D now I can justify $$ spent on truck to wife ;)

Thanks for the replys & suguestions.

Obert,

I cracked mine a couple of years back in the same area. I had a machinist friend mill the boss off flat and then tap it. There is plenty of meat under the boss to tap. It worked out great and saved me $200 for a new one.

Stock filter is 10 micron... I believe 10 micron at something like 98%...

The JB weld trick is still holding on my dad's truck... I only recently picked the other head up just because...

With the truck outside, it was a long shot. The JB works some, I'll still loose fuel prime but not as fast. It was barely warm enough yesterday and cold last night. I guess I'll pull the assembly and see how bad it is, I know a REALLY good welder and was thinking fill in the hole and start over. Milling the boss off sounds better, seems like less chance of irreversible damage. Thanks!

I've got my eye on those now, thanks steved. I was on Ebay last week and could find squat, I dont know if "cartridge" was ever on my search list, though. I also found on in TDR classifieds, well a "parting out" truck, but I havent herd back from the guy on that one.

Lose it. I took mine off in December. For five days it did not get above the low teens and it started just fine. I also run the FASS with filters. No heaters.

Yeah, I run without a heater... just need to run with an additive if it gets really cold... the way I look at it, the fuel will gel in the lines overnight if it gets cold enough anyway, so what good does the heater do you then?

The FASS/filters was first to mind, but reality set in and wiht wife back 2 skool for LPN and not working, the FASS will have to wait. Once I get done paying for her lernin' SHE can be the bread winner and I'll just deposit my check directly under my hood Oo. Oo.

... and I agree about the heater anyway-- it is usless. Next the engine is the LAST plase fuel clouds up.....

Have you been able to secure a new filter head yet?

Like I said above, my dad has been running a JB Welded plug for about 3 years now without even a drop of fuel showing.

I believe they may have had a bad batch of heads made... granted his was corroded, but it also looked porous, especially compared to the replacement one I won off eBay... maybe there are a bunch of bad castings??

Good luck in getting it fixed,

no. The JB fix helped me alot, but its only about 90%. The cold weather I think didnt help the cure, so it seeps a little.

I let the ones you pointed out on ebay go. Decent price, but i didnt like the guys shipping charge, and the trucks running good enough to be patient. I could drive it evryday with no prob right now, but that truck sits mostly as i drive a service truck during the week. -- another reason for no hurry.

And I doubt the crack is a result of bad cast, the boss is just split like I over tightend the plug. I thought I was carefull, but apparently not.

The same guy with the ebay filter canisters had several other CTD parts as well. I almost bid on a harmonic balancer but It was ending and I couldnt get the bid in fast enough.
