Dodge took the first contract in 1989. As the 90s came and went, Ford saw the market share that it was losing to Dodge. Ford, in the mid 90s bought 8% of Cummins stock. That's why in the mid 90s you saw Ford medium duty and OTR trucks get Cummins instead of Cat. Well, come renegotiation time for Dodge, Cummins asked Ford for a bid. Ford, owning 8% of Cummins bid lower than Dodge, banking on their stock share pull. Cummins took the higher Dodge offer. This upset Ford and Ford took Cummins to Civil Court over the deal. Court ruled in Cummins favor and Cummins then bought their stocks back from Ford. This was the time that rumors were going around that Ford owned Cummins. They did, but only 8%. That is also why in the late 90s and on in to 2000 you see most medium duty and OTR Ford trucks go back to Crapatillar.
