Anyone use one of the louvered fifth wheel tailgates when towing? I've towed my 5er for about 6 years, and have had some trouble with things blowing out of my bed this year. Lost a piece of firewood in the middle of WY last weekend (fortunately no damage to my rig, and no-one passing me at the time), and almost lost some astro turf carpet this weekend. Would this solve that problem? Any brands that are better than other?

When I purchased a new 88 HR 29' 5er, which I pulled with my F250 furd gasser (worst truck I ever had), I experienced a lot of turbulence on my first towing trip. I asked the HB dealer and he said it was the standard tailgate. I installed a vented V notch tailgate. Turbulence stopped. When I purchased the 95 CTD I installed a chrome vented V notch tailgate right away. Never had turbulence with it.

Yup, I picked up one (Stromberg Carlson) a couple of weeks ago and I love it! I just did about 2200 miles with my trailer and not a thing in the back of the truck moved.

I got mine on ebay from this guy

eBay Motors: Vented / louvered truck tailgate - 03-07 Dodge Ram (item 220118102015 end time Jun-08-07 15:40:19 PDT)

I first got one in 1988 when I began towing GN and 5th wheels, the BEST answer to bed turbulence and air flows caused by the trailer noses air flows into the bed. I recently, finally got one for my 2006 Dodge. While many of the tests regarding bed drag air flows suggest there is no effects on an empty truck, they should actually do some testing on those with GN and 5er noses, that information would probably be astounding. I am seeing a 2mpg gain since installing the new tailgate.

5vr Tailgate

Funny this should come up. I just bought myself one for Fathers Day! After pulling a bone head stunt (pulling out a 4x4 post) I needed a new tailgate until I can get mine repaired... So off to Camping World I went. Attached is the OEM & then my replacement during camping season. Glad to hear they actually work on the turbulance. I've lost (2) of the camping rugs for the coach & their starting to get expensive & all of the :-{} involved when I lose them is definately getting old. Any better MPGs gained will also be a plus!

Hey klaybus.

That's the same tailgate I got, AND, I got it from the same place - Camping World. It certainly IS a nicely made tailgate, eh? I have had several makes on several trucks over the years, but this one had the best construction that I've seen. I also like the fact that it came at a better SALE price. When all was said and done, the freight bill evened it out to what it would have been at list before freight.

2mpg gain? Wow. Is that towing, or everyday driving? Anyone else getting that type of gain?
