Filter Changes with Bio-Diesel

Hey guys,

Does any one that burns their waste engine oil filter it before hand or have an extra filter on the truck. What do you do about possible metallic contamination from normal engine wear, magnets?I think I read that the micron rating for my wix fuel filter is about 17 mics. is there a direct spin on replacement for the factory filter with a smaller micron rating?thanks

I think the safest thing to do would be to filter with the smallest filter available, or some other process before dumping in the tank, i could be wrong, that is how some get rid of it.

With the 12V now i guess i will be on that list LOL, i have around 25-30 gallon that has been bottled up in the 1 gal containers so anyone that has done this wanna jump in here and tell us the what to and what nots

Nah, pump it through a Frantz or a Gulf Coast or a Ralph Wood bypass filter. Ya might have to change your filter element a bit more, but hey, it's only TP.

Heck, all I've ever done is dump it straight into my storage tank in the drive way or directly into the trucks tank, haven't had any problems yet.

DickersonD, You asked about useing a magnet for getting metal particals... ... That would be fine, however, there are some non ferrous metals floating around in our oil, that do not respond to magnets. Manganese is one of them, I think. And maybe Chrome.

There are members on this site that can correct me if I am wrong. Hope they will.

I clean my drain pan as good as possible before draining the engine then pour it into a clear plastic 5 gallon jug and let it settle before using what's on top. I just brought up an older thread that has about 28 posts on this subject if you want to read over it... .

I've done it pretty much this way.

Let the 5 gal jug sit a week or two.

I also strained it through cheesecloth when putting it in the tank.

A word of caution:

I did this in my 550 tank. If the fuel isnt agitated, it will *settle to the bottom*.

I wouldnt worry about it in a 35 gal tank, but unless you have the 550 topped off... ... dont run it too low.

Thanks for all the replys guys and I did a search and read the other threads about this and all I got was basically the "let it settle" technique and I'm just not comfortable with that. I did pump some through a 12 to 9 micron Purolator fuel filter and didn't notice a color change or anything and it was messy and a pain in the butt. Did anyone have any ideas abhout a secondary fuel filter or a factory replacement that is rated smaller than 17 mics. If you are running an aux. filter I would love to know what kind, the micron rating and how much it set you back. Pics would be nice too.

I just went and bought 2 fuel hoses, 1 10 micron spin on filter and a head for the filter. Cost about $50.

That and 2 5 gallon pails, and a 90 degree fitting are my plan.

90 degree in the side at the bottom of one pail, 3-4 feet off the ground, down thru the filter and into the cover of the second. gravity will do the work.

put a shutoff valve inline at the filter head as well just in case.

will post when I get it assembled and tested.

Racor filter

I have a Racor 220 series filter on my truck between the tank and the lift pump. I use a 2 micron filter in the summer, PN R26S and a 10 micron in the winter, PN R26T. I have not tried the waste engine oil yet but this works with the WVO esters.

Does that 2 micron stop up very fast? I was thinking of doing this but I want it to go through the factory filter first so that it will catch bigger stuff before it gets to a really small mic. rating like 2mics. how much is a racor 220 and is it a cartrige style filter? thanks.

I'm thinking of just letting the oil sit there for a few weeks to settle out and then use about 10 heavy duty coffee filters together and pour the oil through to catch anything else. Low tech?

I'm also thinking of putting the used oil in 1 quart containers along with my additives of mmo and powerservice and just putting in 1 quart ever fillup or so.

Also would like to put on one of these http://www.dieselcraft.com/productinfo_12.htm I've already manage to pick up a bad batch of diesel "water" from a major truck stop :(

How much of this is just stupid?

I used to filter my used oil before pouring it into the tank. However, it was a pain. Any more, I just let it settle and dump it in.

I DO have a pre filter installed on the frame just after my relocated lift pump on the 01. 5. I run the same filter on the 92 as well. I change the filters on the 01. 5 based on fuel pressure drop... often being able to go 25k between filter changes. I must not be adding TOO much crud!!!

I ran a lot of oil through my '01 using the settling method, never had an issue. I just wouldn't dump in the last half quart in out of the bottom of the container though. Only ran stock filtration.

The pre-filter I use is a Champ #LFF-5D. I understand it is a common filter on older over the road trucks and farm equipment. I do not know the exact micron ratings, but in talking to the tech department of Champion Laboritories (personal friends), they told me it would be an excellent choice for my truck because it has a slightly larger micron rating than the factory filter. The filter base is an over the counter item from any Cummins dealer in Mexico. Last one I bought cost about $8. 00.
