filter for waste engine oil

Here is what I use on my 12V and 24V. I got a 10 micron $25 (delivered) filter from a tractor supply place. Replacement filters are $5.



I drain the old and put it in a 5 gal pal with hand pump. I pump it through the 10 micron filter and into plastic bottles to mix with the fuel.



The 24V has a Vulcan big line kit and relocated pusher pump. I added one of the 10 micron filters to to frame as a pre filter.

We mix the used oil at 1:100 with the fuel.

The coffee filters should be fine, but I'd cut the used oil with some diesel to speed up the filter process.

I use coffee filters in my Frantz filter, in addition to the normal TP filter.

The easiest method I've used is double or triple a clean cloth over the end of a funnel and pour it in.

This is of course after letting it sit a few weeks to "settle out".

Once the cloth gets clogged, and the oil flow slows, carefully lift the funnel and move it to a clean section.

I havent got the patients to sit there all day doing this, this is pretty fast unless it's very cold out.

I'm thinking of just letting the oil sit there for a few weeks to settle out and then use about 10 heavy duty coffee filters together and pour the oil through to catch anything else. Low tech?



I'm also thinking of putting the used oil in 1 quart containers along with my additives of mmo and powerservice and just putting in 1 quart ever fillup or so.



Also would like to put on one of these http://www.dieselcraft.com/productinfo_12.htm I've already manage to pick up a bad batch of diesel "water" from a major truck stop



How much of this is just stupid?

i read a post from a guy that uses 5 micron polyester felt bags to strain is wvo. they come in different sizes. the model i will be ordering is a box of 50 for ~2$ each.

Settling beats the heck out of any kind of filtration, even the TP/paper towel filters. The only downside to settling is that it takes time. I let mine settle for a couple months, although if I cut it a little with fuel as Patriot suggests, the soot settles out much faster. If the time factor for settling was too long for me, I'd pump it through a Frantz or GCF TP filter. But I don't use much in the tank (usually only a quart per tank), so the waste oil from a single change lasts me quite awhile, which is why I don't mind letting it settle for a good long while.

On a thirty gallon tank how much used oil with a full tank would one be safe in using? I have plenty of used oil to go around and i am in the process of getting set up to run Veggie oil in the 92 but will be a long process getting parts and filters and set up.

Cummins used to publicly say that up to 5% used oil was fine, and I've heard of people using up to 10%. I don't think I'd go more than 5% though.

My truck runs fine on way more than 5%. I typically dump 2-3 gallons in the tank before heading for fuel. Then I will end up putting 30 gallons of #2 in the tank. In higher concentrations you can smell the burnt oil but I dont notice it under approx 10%. Once the turbo is spooled you cant smell it anymore. I have probably been around 50% mix several times when heading to the pumps and noticed no EGT/boost problems nor a noticable lack of power. I try not to do that for many miles as I figure the viscosity is hard on the pump.
