So I go out today to check my air filter cause my fuel mileage sux and I noticed my filter minder is missing with just th grommett left....... I change the air filter (bad dirty) and am gonna duct tape over the grommet for the filter thingy. Guess I dont need i since it never moved....when it was in the truck! I guess that grommet is open to the engine compartment and the inside the airbox?

I have seen filter minders that never move no matter how dirty the filter gets . The hole really won't hurt anything because the air it let's in will still have to go through the filter before it goes to the sender engine .

Mine also is on the engine side of the filter. I really think they all are or wouldn't show increased vacuum due to a plugged filter. Whatever you use to block the hole, make sure it can't be sucked in and damage your turbo.

They're all on the eng side or they wouldn't work.
Ancient history lesson.. The first third gens had a FM that was too sensitive and would move even with a clean filter. Dodge came out with re-calibrated parts to stem customer concern.
I kept the old sensitive one. I like to know the first signs of it getting dirty.

Most air filters get changed too often as they actually work better as they get dirty, too a ceretain point of course. http://www.cumminsfiltration.com/html/en/training/faq/air.html

That IS absolutely correct... and that point is determined by restriction shown by a pressure differntial as measured by a manometer to be about 25" for the Cummins ISB. The plastic filter minder that comes on these trucks is a CHEAP way to approximate a manometer, but I am going to hook up one of these Donaldson Gauges No. X002730 which monitors restriction up to 30" in real time. They are meant for detremining air filtyer service intervals on OTR rigs and heavy euiqpment. Please note that they are a 2.625" diameter gauge, slightly larger then the more common 2.125" gauges.

PLENTY of good info here--

DO Check out the chart on the lower right corner of the first page, and the actual gauge on the lower left side of the last page...of course nothing wrong with reading the whole thing!!

My filter minder was missing when I bought my 03. The intake wasn't dusty and the price was right so I let it slide. I used a small plastic plug with a dab of glue to plug the hole. I inspect my air filter every 5k and usually replace it at that time.
Filter minders work great, but scare me too because Ive seen so many broken off or missing on engines operating in dusty conditions.

I would use something other than duct tape, the heat might weaken the glue and suck the tape into the turbo.

I use my filter minder, as it works when it should.

I no longer trust the oem filter minder, particularly after doing the HD mod to my airbox...

Before the mod, and with SmartyJr, it would get sucked down to red just by driving around, even with a NEW filter.

AFTER the HD mod, it NEVER gets sucked in and just the other day I was noticing more black smoke then usual on hard accelerations...relaized that I had not changed my sir filer in awhile (OOOPS) and checked it as soon as I got home. BELOW is what it looked like, no wonder I wasn't getting enough air to burn a little extra fuel--

That being said and done, the 4" thick air filter was DEFINITELY doing it's job even though the filter minder was NOT...the air intake was clean as a whistle. NOTE...just another reason I like to use a light coat of vaseline on each side of the aire filter foam gasket where it seals to the air box...we have been logging this summer and with several >80k pound machines running around for a two months, the top 4" of my rock road has turned to very fine dust!!!

ANYWAYS, like I mentioned earlier in the thread ,I will be replacing the oem filter minder with one of the Donaldson in cab manometers that monitor restriction in real time.--

I would weigh that filter, I had one that looked similar and changed it. I then weighed it and it was only about 60% full of its dirt holding capacity.

I have an OBDII reader, Ultra Gauge, and it can show the pressure measured at the sensor just after the filter minder. It also makes me think the filter mider works, there isn't much of a pressure change from idle to WOT with the HD CAI and OEM 4" filter.

I did weigh the filter after removing it and it was 26g heavier compared to the NIB that I replaced it with.
The dirt holding capacity of those filters is supposed to be 540g when full, but now that I replaced the filter, my black smoke (ie unburned fuel) is GONE. So what does THAT mean ????
