Filtering Waste Oil

The only thing I'm really worried about is brake fluid or antifreeze. All the other stuff you listed should burn. It's diluted enough in the storage tank with motor oil, plus in the truck's fuel tank with diesel that it should be fine.



My filter setup is bascially like in that pic. I used a paint filter in a funnel when I fill the bucket to filter out the larger stuff, then I use a $4 fuel filter on the line at the bottom to get the small stuff. The big fuel filter would flow more I'd imagine, but those are $30

Yeah, just verify with the place that you are getting oil and not some "mixture" of a bunch of crap...



I had the neighbor take 10 gallons of mixed gear oil/synchromesh/motor oil off my hands... kinda nice having a diesel tech with a service truck as your neighbor... I was going to try it on that mess, but figured the synthetics might give me problems...



I already have an older style AC Delco filter that is rated at 10 micron (it is a replaceable filter and has a drain too). With about an hour and a couple more dollars, I ought to be into the used motor oil recycling club... just in time for two oil changes!



I'm also going to figure out a way to drain my filters on top of this thing too... figure drain everything into the bucket, let it set a few days, then start pulling from about an inch or so from the bottom and running through a 10 micron filter ought to about eliminate any nastieness.



And then I have the 3 micron filter on the truck...



I also have an Amsoil bypass on the oil of the truck... someone already posted that idea... with a bypass you should be about ready to dump the oil straight into the fuel tank...



So how long does it take to gravity feed a couple gallons of oil through this type of setup anyhow?

For the first couple of years that I burnt used oil in the fuel, I too had a nice filter setup. It was slow and messy. And, I couldn't see that it really did that much good. I finally gave up and just started pouring the used oil into the tank after letting it settle for a week or more. It made NO difference in my fuel filter life!!! I have a pre filter ahead of the factory filter. I change both when the fuel pressure starts to drop. I COMMONLY get 25-30k miles out of a pair of filters!!!

I stick with the 5% or less that cummins sez is ok.

here is the setup, very simple. don't mind the leak, I used old epoxy, and it never cured. Gotta take it apart and fix that.

I built an almost identical setup to this... all I need to finish it is a single 1/4" NPT plug and oil!



I'll take a picture of mine when I get it finished... I left the lid on the bucket and inserted a homemade funnel... to keep as much crude (read: bugs and mice) out of the filter oil as possible!! I also think I'll pick up a piece of screen to drain through as I know I have a bunch of crud in the bottom of my covered pan.

working on a similar setup, but using water filters. a magnet will be good for ferrous material, but some of the other metals like brass/ aluminum will not get picke up by it. My plan is to filter in 3 stages 10/5/2 micron. I have a pump, but will try the gravity set up.



collecting the oil, maybe I could start a mobile oil change business as wel (actually for a few friends/ family) use thier oil and have them make me dinner
