Filtration question

Has anyone found out if the 2 micron filters that are being used one several aftermarket systems actually work ?

I have looked at several filter systems but many of them put a 2 micron filter on the pressure side of the pump and claim it works great. The problem there is a difference between pressure side filtration and vacume / suction side filtration. Several manufacturers have told me a 2 micron filter will not filter at 2 microns on the pressure side of the pump only on the vacume side.

1. Do Fass systems with dual filters have 1 or both filters on the vacume side?

2. Do the filter systems from Glacier Diesel or other companies place the 2 micron filter on the vacume side of the pump ?

The fuel filters on stock and glacier diesel's setup are all on the downstream side of the lift pump. I do not know about the FASS setup.

FASS is downstream as well... the upstream filter is only a screen...



I would think the guys you were talking to were talking about filter flow direction... most filters are designed to filter on the pressure side (not a vaccum), and they are also designed to have the fluid flow in a particular direction (either outside in which is typical or inside out which is commonly called a "reverse flow"). There are not too many manufacturers that like a restrictive filter upstream of a pump as they will cause cavitation a lot of times...



I know the FASS particulate filter is supposed to be downstream of the pump (going by fleetguard's info), that is is flowing the right way (again, from fleetguard's info), and that is has a can burst of 300psi and a filter media collapse of 80psi (more than the FASS is capable of producing).



Another thing to remember is that flow rate affects filtration... a filter with a high flow rating will filter better at a lower flow rate...
