Well after 4 months of reading all your fun topics I decided it was time to make the leap! I'm ordering my 03 Silver SLT 3500 HO/48RE 4x4 Quad tommorrow. Oo. Can't wait. Since I will use the truck for my Landscape business, hence it will plow snow in the winter and pull my equipment all summer long I've decide to go with the 4. 10 gear sets. My question is about the final drive ratios of the 48RE vs the 6Spd. I thought I read somewhere that they were different. Please correct me if wrong. Must say I have truly enjoyed reading all the great comments on the site! Nice to know there are others that think like I do when it comes to Diesel trucks! By the way this will be my first new vehicle ever, always have been buying wrecks and rebuilding them, thought it was time to indulge and just enjoy driving something I didn't have to rebuild. Oo. Thanks for your input!

I just want to say congratulations on your decision... my truck is my 2nd new vehicle ever, and my first truck, and I get giddy every time I get in it , can't help with your actual question, just hope yours gives you the same feeling!!!!!!

Congrats! Good decision to go with the 4. 10 ratio. I plow snow commerically/and pull a landscape trailer also, and have the 4. 10,this truck is not only unstoppable, but the trans run about 25 degrees cooler than my last Ram/Cummins with 3. 55 ratio. The only downside is a little extra noise /RPM above 85,but who drives there much. Your trans will last a lot longer with 4. 10 in a plowing/towing environment. The first gr ratio of 2. 45 is very tall, this is why the 4. 10 helps so much. If i were you,id get the Mag hytec DD pan,and put it on,at your first trans service. I have one,and it stablizes the trans temps, drops the temps about 15-20 degrees average. I have not seen over 210 hot line ever, since the Mag hytec i havent seen over 195 hot line temps, even plowing.

The 48RE does indeed have a slightly taller overdrive than the NV5600. The automatic's ratio is 0. 69:1 while the handshifter is 0. 75:1 - meaning, the engine will turn a handful of rpms slower at speed in overdrive with the 48RE and might be good for 1 mpg, depending on load.

Third gear of the 48RE and 5th of the 5600 are both 1:1, so no difference if you downshift from overdrive for hills or with heavy loads.

Doesn't that seem strange that the engineers at Dodge designed it that way? After all if you have 2 more gears to work with you would think it could be designed to start out a little lower than the auto in 1st gear and finishing a little higher in 6th, on the 6 spd. manual vs. the 4spd. auto... . hmmm..... What does the gear ratio look like on the bottom end, 1st gear std. vs. 1st gear auto? (in the 6spd. )... ... also wonder how it compares to the 5spd. manual...

here's the full breakdown of the trannies:

48RE

2. 45

1. 45

1. 00

0. 69

NV4500

5. 61

3. 04

1. 67

1. 00

0. 75

NV5600

5. 63

3. 38

2. 04

1. 39

1. 00

0. 73 (I mistyped 0. 75 above)

Even if you never use the granny-1st with the 5600, the remaining 5 gears are perfectly spaced for a low-rev-band diesel. The 48RE is essentially gears 3-4-5-6 of the 5600. just slightly wider spacing.

Thanks for all the info... . Is the 48re geared the same as the 47re? (since that is what I currently drive) Thanks, Marty

Thanks for all the info on the 48RE / NV5600 trans ratios!!! Today I went to the dealer and placed my order!!! Now I get the opportunity to learn patience, And I can tell that's going to be tough, my wife is already asking me to go back out to the Pole Barn, shes tired of me telling her all about the finer points of the new family member. Ya Hoo can't wait I actually won't have to rebuild this one! Snow Man, thanks for the info, I absolutely will get the Mag hytec DD pan upon that first trans service. Thanks to all for the responses to my last post even though I placed it in the wrong spot. OOPS.
