I have been fighting with trying to get a tach working in my truck for years! I finally found the problem tonight and thought I'd pass this on to anyone else that may be having the same problem.
The lead under the dash didn't seem to have a signal and I thought it was just because it didn't require a large signal and that I was just not measuring it right. Well, I got a new ECM a few months ago as a spare and tonight decide to swap it out for the old one. I have a NOS original factory tach I got last year from Adam in Klamath Falls (cumminz4 ever) and after I swaped the ECM out, found it was working right! Oo. It did not work on the old ECM.
So, if your tach lead is not working if you try to install a tach, it probably is the ECM.
Now all I have to do is get it mounted.
