Here in NJ, the IBEW has been going through some pretty tough unemployment for the last year and a half. I've been out of work since August 1st 2003. I worked about 27 days last year (3 contractors no less) I rode the out of work list to #3 (475 unemployed= about a 20 page list). So I get to pass jobs because of my seniority.

Most jobs that have come in have been short term 2 weeks to a month. If I work 30 days I go to the end of the list. Well a job came in at Budweiser in Newark NJ for 4 people 3+ months possiblity of overtime. The 2 people ahead of me passed it and the rest of the people came from the bottom of page 2. So figure almost 40 people passed this job who have been out of work for at least a year.

There is one caveat to working at Budweiser.

"Mandatory Drug Testing".

I would also like to thank testraub for a very generous job offer a few nights ago.

So I am going to work Monday..... Let the mods begin.....

Congratulations on finding work. Personally, I went through a real job drought when I was in the carpenter's union during the early '80s, so I can empathize.

The good was it made me do some career planning and educational adjustments that have worked out well - thank you Jesus. :D

Nothing is wrong with mandatory drug testing. Although back in the day at Budweiser it was part of the contract for the bud plant workers to be alowed to drink on the premises.

But one would think if you had a choice between being a recreational user and feeding your family. That bringing home the bacon would would be more important. Now it is entirely possible that some of those 40 people married rich wives or don't want to work. But when the only job that has come in for months is this one. The mandatory drug testing would be highly suspect.

The other rumor about this job has been the overtime. Could go 10-12 hours a day @ 6-7 days a week. So it behoove people to get down there. People get less picky about jobs when they are broke.

There will be another call in a week or two. So we'll see how far down the list it goes.

Is'nt Alcohol a Drug, or is that excluded? People living in Glasshouses should avoid throwing stones. "I'll Drink to That". Scrum Down
