Cross Country 1st time, Suggestions?

My brother in law rented a Bobcat 973 and asked for assistance in towing it to his property. Certainly not the biggest and baddest load ever towed by the CTD, but it was big to me as it was my first tow. I'm guessing the weight with the trailer to be around 7,000 lbs. , not sure what a Bobcat weighs ? Anyway, all went well. Definately knew I was dragging something back there. The rental shop wanted me to use a pintle as that's what all their trailers are set up for. Kinda crappy, wouldn't want to drag it around everyday with all that slop jerking around.

The truck towed great, up and down some pretty good grades. The HX40 16cm was pretty laggy when shifting on a grade, but in all fairness my turbo always has some lag on the hot and humid days, today was both. I didn't use the TST box, just ran with the injectors (step 5) and the EZ box. Egts were easily contained to no more than 1000F pre-turbo on the steepest climbs. I have a new found pride in the BD brake as well, it's slowing power under a load is incredible. At one point, on the return trip, I found myself going down a 17% grade with a 4 way stop right at the bottom. I put her in 2nd gear as I approached the light and actually had to tap the accelerator to disengage the brake to keep moving !

Good pic. Mark, thanks for the reply ! I bet it's pretty sweet pullin with that gooseneck trailer, pintles just plain suck IMHO.

A bobcat 900 series loader weighs about 9900 lbs,

add in 2-3000 for the trailer and you were pulling 12k+.

It's hard to say which is more fun to drive, a bobcat or the truck :)

cheers

:--) DANG Scott that 30ft gooseneck weighed 9K lbs. ! With the truck I was pushing just under 14K! Man you were pull'n more than you thought you were! I had fun with that load, constantly adjusted my brake box trying to figure it out because I had never used it before(I usually use a buddy's 20ft GN that the brakes don't work on)

I would have loved to have had an exhaust brake with that load, AND when I had to go pick up my girlfriends mom's Jeep Cherokee and haul it back in the POURING rain Friday!

Yikes !!! Now I am really impressed with this truck !!! Thanks for the info, Drew !!! I agree on the which is more fun topic, that Bobcat is a blast ! Very easy controls to learn as well for those that just pretend to be contractors on the weekends ;) . It's funny how you see the Bobcats on jobsites all the time, never imagined that they weigh that much. Guessing that they are built fairly well ? Best part was that it's diesel powered.

Mark, it's a good thing I don't have that gooseneck trailer parked at my house... I think my wife's mini-van would be getting towed all around the town on my days off, just for kicks :D
